Weight/size issues

I went for a checkup with my surgeon last week. He told me he would still like to to continue to lose more weight. I have lost 79 pounds to date, in about 15 months. I am 5'4", weight 168 and take a size 6. I am 10 pounds up from my lowest weight  because I had foot surgery and have been unable to walk which is my main exercise. I was a comfortable size 4 at 158 pounds. I was very pleased at the size 4, was comfortable, felt good and liked the way I looked. He would like me to get down to 130-135 pounds. He says my weight is too high for my height. I think at that weight I would be too small. If I can even get down to that weight I worry that I will look too thin. I am in my 50s and I think a size 4 is fine. I go to my foot doctor next week and hope to get the go ahead to weight bear on my foot. Then I can get those 10 pounds off. What I need to know is anyone else like this, where you weigh more than you look?  How do you tell your doctor you don't want to lose as much as he wants? I was on 13 medications and now I am only on 2. So I don't think this is health issue. Any suggestions would help.

I'm 5'4" and 158 seems too high to me. I'd want to be in the 130s or 120s. But have you had your body fat tested?  That's a much better indicator of where you should be in my opinion.

Everyone is different I am also 5' 4" and look great around 155 which I will be ecstatic if I reach that. My surgeons chart also states around 130 but I have never been lower than 145 since being a teen.

I say stay at the weight that makes you feel the best....it is your body!! I know for me I have lifted weights for years so I am more muscular and therefore look smaller than what I actually weigh.

Thanks! I don't think I could ever even get to the 130s. Plus I have a really big head so it wouldn't be a good look.

Where do you shop?  I would love to buy a size 2.  I am 55 years old,  5'7, and 145 to 148 pounds.  I wear a solid size 8.  I have a few size 6 skirts.  At 145 I am smack dab in the middle of a normal BMI.  I don't think I look too thin at this weight.  My doctor says I can lose down to 125 and still be in a normal BMI ( at the lower end).

I wear a lot of Ann Taylor, Loft and J Crew. Also Banana Republic and Nordstroms. And I love Target! I think everyone is built differently. My sister weights about the same as me, is an inch taller and she wears a 10. My doctor did tell me that I carried a lot of my weight in my abdomen, the internal kind that is wrapped around your organs. But my BMI is still in the overweight category. At my age I don't want to be too thin anyway because it when my face is too thin I look older.

I'm 5'8" and weighed 125 right after hi school and was just about right so you should be fine there. I was a little too skinny then but at 135-145 I was perfect and back then 125 was at the low end for my height but charts were stricter back then. I'll be thrilled if i get to 150 now but you never know till you get there, you just may not be used to seeing yourself that thin.

I've been thinking about this for a while and I am going to make 150 my goal weight. If I can get there and maintain it for 6 months to a year, I may consider a tummy tuck. I have already consulted with a doctor and it is mostly just skin that needs to be removed. I will be satisfied with a size 4.

Be satisfied with a number on the scale if you want. Be satisfied with a BMI number if you'd rather. Be satisfied with a health goal, or how far you are able to walk or run. But please ignore clothes sizes. It sounds like the most important thing for you is being a size 4. Sizes change all the time, they change between brands, and manufacturers. I could probably find a brand of size 4 that would fit me. It's just arbitrary.

168 at 5'4" is not too skinny, not remotely. You could lose 20 more if you wanted, and be even healthier. And if your extra fat is internal, as you say, it is the most unhealthy kind of fat, and should prompt you to lose it if you can.

As time goes on this gets harder. If you are typical, you'll regain 10 or 20 pounds a year or two from now. Take off some extra now, while you can.

I actually got down to 115 in High School (a long time ago!) and didn't look healthy. I looked and felt my best at 145 or so. I know my BMI is too high which probably prompted my doctor to tell me I needed to lose more. I want to get to a normal BMI, out of the overweight and obese catagory. I agree with my doctor that I need to lose weight, just not the number.
