I'm going to do it!

I'm in the stages of planning surgery (VSG) in Mexico. There is a lot to research, and getting unbiased information is proving be be quite tricky. I'll read a glowing testimonial for a particular surgeon, only to discover the "reviewer" works for said guy. Sigh....

I have been on the referral list in my city for bariatric surgery for over a year, and haven't even had an initial consultation yet. Even if approved, surgery can be another three to five years after that. I have co-morbidities, and really can't afford to wait that long, so out-of-country self-pay it is.

My family doctor is very supportive of my decision; I'm in a weight-management programme, and have lost some weight, but starting out with a BMI>50.... Well.... Suffice to say, I need the leg-up that WLS can offer.

I've been reading on this forum for about a year now, and it's time to take the plunge! Now that I've definitely made up my mind to get sleeved, I need to settle on the right surgeon.

Happy to learn from all your experiences and knowledge; thanks to everyone who shares information.

One of my best friends just got back yesterday from having RNY surgery in Tijuana. She loved her surgeon, and has nothing but good things to say about the experience (except for the fact that they seemed to have no idea what a washcloth was either at the hospital or the hotel lol...apparently they just use the bar of soap!)

She's doing great! She actually used one of the facilities that advertises here on OH: http://www.alighterme.com/

That's funny about the washcloth! I had a hotel maid once ask me what my cloth was for; she thought I was going to clean the bathroom with it! LOL

I've checked out that website, and talked with them. I can't help but wonder why they are charging around half the price of Dr Alvarez....

I don't know why, but my friend is very happy with her results. They have outstanding reviews as well.

I read somewhere that in some countries, washcloths are seen as really personal items - and the concept of washing your face with some cloth that scrubbed someoone's rear end the day before seems bizarre (to them). So people in those countries take their own washcloths with them when they travel. I don't know if that's true or not, but it makes sense...

although maybe it's the case in Mexico that they're just not very common? I don't know...

Who knows? lol My friend had a nurse scrounge up a small towel. She managed to "appropriate" a pair of scissors, and cut it up for washcloths! American ingenuity at it's finest! lol
