Hi all. I know all is different but was just curious. - Reason why I asked below.

So I've been fat all my life. And I can't imagine being slim.

I just imagine following the plan. But still being overweight. I suppose it doesn't help my surgeon doesn't want me to get below 28-30 bmi because he thinks I'll look gaunt and being 28 doesn't mean I'm not healthy and I'll have exactly the same health as someone who's bmi of 24 MY SURGEON SAYS he also said "I'm bmi 28 do I look unhealthy?" He says. No he looks slim. He said this because I said I want a normal BMI to reduce risk of weight related conditions. Which I thought was reasonable

  1. I'm 5.2 so normal is I think. 108-135 ( don't quote me on that )

I was 244lbs pre op liquid diet. 237 or 235 day of surgery I forget (4th July) and 229 today. My goal in my mind was 135 but I feel I should work out the weight for the bmi my surgeon wants me to get to. Perhaps then if I reach a year and ahalf after sticking to the plan and still over weight I can atleast reach my surgeon's goal.

Thanks for reading

'Normal' is subjective. Your standard of normal is based on BMI, many don't buy into the BMI charts.

Bottom line is you can achieve whatever you want to. Doc doesn't know if you'll look gaunt- and if you do it may be temporary as the weight shifts around over time.

Normal BMI is no guarantee of warding off weight related conditions. Genetics plays a huge factor in things like diabetes/heart health. Of course weight influences astronomically- but nothing gives a guarantee.

Normal BMI is not subjective. The criteria for a normal healthy BMI is pretty clear and static.

I am fully aware a healthy BMI does not guarantee anything. But it factually and statistically does reduce risk of many things. and that is something's I would like. I am fully aware you can be skinny and get cancer for example just like a fat person. and that it depends on genetics. But IRS the reduction of risk I am after. I have high blood pressure which is weight related so I look forward to that no longer being an issue. But yes genetically I am at higher risk of things like diabetes which could still happen. But less likely when my weight is in check.

And thank you. I don't even care if I do look gaunt lol and I have heard about the temp thing were it fills out eventually. I'll see if I lose the weight first I'm not even worried about the gaunt bit yet .

Thanks for responding.

You didn't red what I wrote. I didn't say Normal BMI is subjective- I said "Normal" is subjective.

You're using BMI as the measure for normal- I don't.

I should be there in the next week or three. Starting weight 319. Top side of normal BMI is 145 for me. It'll have taken me 3.5 years? That's including a year of no loss after my dad died.

I had a high weight of 283lbs, surgery weight of 229lbs and I'm currently around 146. My BMI is in the low 23's now and I don't think I look gaunt, but maybe? I'm 5'7" and I'd be happy to lose another 10lbs if it happens. I'd also be happy to stay where I am.

I'm 6 months post op. I lost a lot pre-surgery though (I actually lost it in 2011-2012 for the most part, so it's been gone awhile).

Not even close to gaunt. You look great. (Do you poke your collarbones all the time? I do..)

Did you learn that on America's Next Top Model too? I'm actually to the point where when I smile wide my collar bones/neck/shoulders look very boney. I was just telling Jon last night that I had no idea that smiling could cause such skeletal changes. I'm amazed by how much my fat seems to continue decreasing even when my weight isn't changing much right now.
