I am having pain. hunger pain from an empty stomach. I am only 4 day post op.! WTH. I drank 2 ounces of water and it got worst. The level of pain increases and decreases but it is stomach pain from hunger. Anyone else get hunger back so fast? Will it go away again?

Might not be hunger ... your nerves have been cut and are healing. Your brain might be interpreting the sensation as hunger. (like ghost pain after a person loses a body part) We all know this part sucks but it does get better.

If you fall down you just have to get back up.

Are you on a PPI? Stomach acid can mimic hunger, so some surgeons prescribe one for the first month or so.

Pepcid is an H2 inhibitor (Zantac is one too). They don't work for me. I need a PPI (proton pump inhibitor) like Prevacid to keep my acid at bay. Check with your doctor about switching. It may make a huge difference for you.

I'm guessing acid too... Call you surgeon. If they don't have you on a PPI, they will likely put you on one.

At this point post-op you can't trust anything your stomach is telling you. The nerves have been severed so it's not a reliable source of information. What your brain is interpreting as hunger is likely either acid or dehydration. If you're not taking a PPI, ask your surgeon about getting on one.

How much liquid are you getting in each day? You need to be getting a minimum of 64 ounces. If you're already getting that, aim for 96. If you're having problems with liquids, work to find out the liquid that will work for you. Some people have an easier time with different temperatures - hot broth, warm tea, ice cold crystal light.. whatever works for you drink that.

Acid, as others said. I'm shocked they didn't start you on a PPI.

I'm day 3 post-op and there is no hunger whatsoever but there is pain. That pain is most prevalent when I swallow anything but I am assuming it is as all the responses note above: acid dehydration and nerve pain and gas. You absolutely must drink something and small sips are the only way. I'm using the 1oz/30ml Med cups from the hospital. Take two swallows to get that once ounce down and it gets easier as the day goes on. Any more than that really hurts me.

hope things get better soon.

take care.
