Portion question..Volume or weight?

Hi, VSG vets. So, I'm on Day 3 of my pureed diet. I've done well. Only one food (cottage cheese) seemed to cause stomach pain. I'm doing very small portions, clean, simple food, tiny bites chewed ad nauseam.

I'm trying to get protein in my food to ween away from protein shakes. I've been eating chicken that I instant-pot cooked in water and broth, then shredded. When I give myself a 2oz portion--I'm using 1/4 cup (so, by volume). But on My Fitness Pal, 2oz I'm guessing means by weight (I weighed by 1/4 of shredded chicken--nowhere near 2oz). The issue is: I think that in using MFP, I'm overestimating my protein for the day. Also, I've been hungry a lot of the day (yes, I'm hydrated and yes on the PPI)--wonder if its because I think I'm getting more protein than I am.

So, how do you guys do it? Should I be visualizing 1/4 cups or should I be weighing to 2oz? Or maybe it depends on my diet stage?

TIA for any thoughts. My nutritionist was very firm in making me promise I'd hit at least 70g of protein per day.

I weigh my portions. It's much better at determining how much I am actually eating.

Good luck

I weigh solids and measure liquids. I've done that since WLS.

Right after surgery, volume is critical. If you put too much volume in your new stomach, you could critically injure yourself.

After that, tracking your food is what enables you to control calories. Volume is useless for that. MyFitnessPal needs the exact weight of food to accurately track macros and calories.

Volume for the short term, weight for ever after.

Thanks. I have been very conservative and have never felt fullness or restriction. My post op food and menu guide says I most likely could only tolerate 2-4oz at a meal, and I feel no need or desire test that. I'll stick to using the 1/4 cup measuring cup for purée and will talk to my nutritionist about weight when I switch to soft foods.

I did volume until I was in the soft solid stage - for me, that was at week 4. Then I switched to weight.

So, basically I treated purees like liquids and did them by volume.

I hope you're pureeing the instant pot chicken and not just shredding it! Pureed food is different than just shredding things.

I would imagine that, yes, for MFP 2oz is weight, not volume.

How much liquid are you getting? You might consider still having a protein shake, if you've completely weaned from them, both in order to get to your protein goal and to get more liquid.

Thank you! I'm mixing the chicken (which is already very "wet" ) with humus, avocado or mustard and purée-Ing it to a mush.

I am still doing at least one protein shake per day. My liquid intake is fine--though I won't say it isn't a struggle for a person who used to gulp 90 or more oz per day easily.

Counting shakes and clear protein drinks, I?m just hitting the 64oz per day. This includes any water that I drink after midnight ( I wake a couple of times per night). I?d like to get it higher, but it?s tough.

I'd definitely work on increasing it and that might help. 64 ounces is really a minimum, especially if your body is used to getting 90+!

I know you think your intake is fine, because you're meeting that 64 ounce goal, but I've learned that these numbers are more like one size fits all clothes. It might fit a lot of people, but you might find that you do better with more.
