Intro, and a couple questions
Hi everyone,
I have been haning around here for a while, and have talked to some of your in various threads.
I'm Sue. Married to my husband of 11 1/2 years have a active little boy who is 5 years old.
I am just about a week from having my RNY (12/14). I have been going through a crazy amount of emotions these last couple weeks. I started my liquid diet last Wednesday and have been having 4 LC Slim Fasts a day with all the raw veggies I want (and of course the water 64 oz. or more everyday).
When you came home from the hospital did you have anyone stay home with you for the first couple days? I figure since it is a Wednesday surgery, I will be home Friday and hubby will be home with me till Sunday and he will go back to work on Monday. He can work from home that next week if I feel I cannot be left alone with my son those first days. Just wondering what you all did.
Was there anything you are really glad you brought to the hospital to have around while there?
I appreciate any input you can give me.
Thanks!

I'm having RNY the day after you and am also going through some crazy emotions. I have a 6yo and 4yo twins. My husband will also be home through Sunday. I normally work Mon/Tues afternoon and evening so I have my regular babysitter coming during those hours so I can get a break. She will make the kids dinner and maybe get them out of the house if I want to nap. My next door neighbor has also offered to take the kids for a few hours or drive me places if I can't manage.
Good luck! We can be on this crazy journey together.

I was especially thankful that I had my husband at the hospital with me. When I walked, he pushed my IV foller pole, when I needed a little extra help pushing myself upright out of the bed he ws there to help me. If you can have someone with you it is both physically and emotionally helpful.

Well I felt like I'd been run over by a mack truck lol . Friend said I looked like it too ! I didnt need a lot of help but i did need help getting up to go to the bathroom the first few days . The bathroom urge was URGENT and unexpected ... and the geting up process was SLOW .
Could I have done it by myself ? probably .... but it was nice to have a friend around .

My sister came for a couple of days when I got home from the hospital. She basically took care of my DH, not me. I was pretty independent by the time I was home (2 days). I didn't have DH stay in the hospital with me, I had great nurses and he wouldn't have gotten any rest at all. BUT, I didn't have children to deal with and that is a whole other issue. I would have wanted some help with the kids for a few days at least. You may want a nap for a week or more.

Hi Sue -
I was in the same boat as Price. It wasn't me that needed the help really, it was my husband. We have a 4 y.o. little boy, who is a tasmanian devil of activity. So if any help was really needed, it was my husband needing help keeping up with him! My surgery was also on Wed., so it was the same situation as you. By the next Monday, he went back to work, my son went to daycare and I was able to rest. The only time I really needed my husband was to have him redress the bandages around my drain that I had in for a week, and for some reason, he liked to portion out my pain medication for me too.
As for the hospital, I had packed the most amazing bag full of everything I anticipated I would want or need for my stay. Didn't use 1 thing in the darn bag. Your lips will be SUPER dry and chapped. Hopefully your hospital will give you a cup of sponge sticks dipped in ice water. They were A-MAZ-ING.
The emotions are totally normal - I was such a crybaby the week leading up to my surgery. And FYI, that hasn't really stopped. I find myself MUCH more emotional now after surgery than I was before. My doctor says that's normal.
Good luck and congrats, you are on your way to a wonderful journey!

I had help the first few days... I have a 5 year old, too. I took all sorts of stuff and didn't use any of it either. Lol. One thing that helped me... Once i was ok to walk i walked the halls at night if you cannot sleep. Lot less traffic!!!
You will be amazed at how quickly time in the hospital goes by!!! Good luck!!!

Thank you all for your help and wisdom.
My husband realized he has 2 more days of vacation left, so he will take them for that Monday & Tuesday after my surgery. He will also be with me while I am in the hospital and help me when needed. Thank goodness! I plan on bringing my phone or laptop, carmex (chapstick), gas-x strips, and gonna wear my PJ to the hospital, so I can wear them home, and a pillow for the car ride home. I figure I won't need anything else.

Good luck Sue and welcome to the LW Board.
Chapstick was the main thing I needed at the hospital. I had my laptop, but never opened it. Slept most of the time and walked.
I used my toilet items such as toothbrush, shampoo and was glad I had my own.
My husband was with me in the hospital and we were at my parents so he stayed the entire time also. He had to help me up out of the bed, but that was all the help I needed. Everyone is so different though.
