Some sugar alcohols are really hard on RNY and DS patients. Too much of them can give us gas and diarrhea.  I think in small quantities some are fine. I have to stick to Splenda and stevia/Truvia. Some folks are fine Equal and NutraSweet. Maltitol is one to stay away from.

Sugar alcohol's can be issues for pre-ops as well as post op's...I've been using splenda for years but many others give me terrible issues.

My cast iron pouch made from my old cast iron tummy doesn't have a problem with any of them. but tread lightly, others report all kinds of problems.

I have to watch how much I use at a time because I dump on it just like sugar. I was having a lot of hot flashes when I would drink unsweetened iced tea and that's when I figured out I was dumping on the splenda. It doesn't bother me as much in food as it does in liquids.

As everyone said, some have difficulty with sugar alcohols and others dont. I have never heard of anyone though having trouble with jello! I eat some almost every day.

Good luck with your upcoming surgery!!

I used to have issues with them like gas and diarrhea but since I have problems with constipation I would eat things with them to use as a laxative.  Now I seem to have built up a tolerance to them as they have zero affect on me now.  I can eat them by the bucket full and I don't get a toot.  Same thing with Miralax.  I use a capful every day and I still have a problem going.  It's like my body is used to those things now and I have to up the ante.
