Losing weight before the surgery

Just wondering how some of you managed to lose weight BEFORE you weight loss surgery. I have been trying to exercise, but have been unable to control my food very well. While I know it will be better for me to take some of the weight off before the surgery, I am having a hard time wrapping my head around how to get started. Any advice?

My DH had VSG in December, so since his food needs changed, so did the way I eat. I have lost 24 pounds since February. There are many different plans for post-op, but since I still have a full size stomach, I can hold more food. But the basics of what I am doing is exercise 3-6 times a wekk (I do different things), and I no longer eat starchy carbs. The carbs I eat are veggies and some fruits. I also don't drink calories. I hope that helps.

I started logging my food on an online web site. Just the act of writing things down got me losing.

We were placed on a 1500 cal diet while we were getting our classes in then 4 weeks before surgery, 5 optifast shakes a day plus one small food meal.  I lost weight with that.  WW or South Beach, there are lots of choices.

If you aren't approved yet, remember the magic numbers.  35BMI with co-morbidities, 40 without will usually get you approved.  It is harder if you drop below those numbers.

I had a six month class to take prior to surgery. Learned a lot about post op life and weighed in monthly. How long before your surgery????

I went to a Diabetes training program and exercise program, then had a 2 week liquid diet with 3 protein shakes a day and one low carb meal.  I lost 14 1/2 pounds prior to surgery.  It was hard prior to surgery.  I had to keep a food log, I think that is the best thing to help you.  It really shows what you are eating.  Be sure to weigh and measure everything that goes into your mouth.

Good luck.

Hi Everyone,

I do not have a surgery date yet because I have to complete three more visits to the nutrition counselor. Even though I have been exercising, I have not been able to get my food under control. I am dreading getting back on the scale in her office in another week and a half.
Thanks for all the great advice. I am going to start a food journal and try to write everything down.
