Why did you choose the DS?

I was just wondering what your main reason was for choosing the DS surgery? Would you choose it again if you had it to do over?  I noticed there are a few light weights here who have had the ds surgery?

I am also a light weight and have researched and chose to have DS surgery I think it fits me the best out of any of the surgeries offered. I am being challenged here by some. I'm also being told that is to extreme for me and if anything happen there is no doctor anywhere near me that does that type of surgery. Another question I got was why do you think there are no DS surgeons in New England?

Thanks all

Welcome to the Lightweight board.

First, most surgeons don't do the DS because of the time it takes to do it versus the other surgeries. And the extra training it takes to do one.

Closest to New England is NY and PA. And the surgeon in PA will not do a lightweight. My husband's surgeon is in NY, mine here in TN...both were more than willing to adjust the common channel if needed. That is the ONLY part I wish I had done differently...I wish mine was 100-125...it's 175.

Okay, why I chose the DS:
1) The diet is closest to what I had been eating for a decade, high protein/low carb because of my diabetes. And while I love carbs, I love meat/veggies more.

2) I needed to be able to take NSAIDS after surgery. I had back surgery in 2006 and have arthritis all over.

3) I wanted the one that had the best resolution of co-morbids

4) I wanted the one that had the least chance of regain.

Oh, and did I say, I needed to take NSAIDS???? LOL

Looking back, it was the best thing I ever did for me.

 Hi Liz,
Thanks for the reply and the welcome. I also need to take nsaids. The surgeon I choice to do it Dr Kemmeter has given me a choice of a 100 or 125 common channel. I guess all the questions being thrown at me today just made me stop and take another look. Not like i dont have time while I"m waiting for insurance companies! :)

Trish, either one will work....Mine was longer because I am a very lightweight...I was a 35.2 going into surgery.

As for Dr. Kemmeter, he's a good choice. Are you on FB? We have several groups there...closed ones so you have to know they are there. Here is a link to my profile...I can get you in two, the other one, I'll have to give you the link to the admin. One is for LW, one for DS'ers, and one is for Michigan DS'ers (yes, I am in there...lived in MI for 6 years)

I had 5 comorbidities and am a grazer. According to my surgeon's definitions of types of eater, the DS fit me to a "T". He was a little bit hesitant to do a DS on a LW but he couldn't argue with his own logic and parameters, and I told him I was retired military and knew how to follow orders. lol  Anyway, best long term results so far is the DS and I got into the statistics.

For me my decision for the DS had a few factors. I knew people who had RNY that were not happy at all. I wanted a procedure that would work with a lifestyle I could live with without ever having to have a revision. My background- I was brought up on a heavy fat/meat lifestyle with carbs also and I knew I loved meat. Still do. I wanted a procedure that would work with me and for me.

There is the control factor, Fran. I wanted to control the WLS not the other way around. I heard a 9-year post-op say that last night at support group and thought it was a valid point for my personality type.
