I am having the RNY surgery in two weeks, on Sept 19 ... can't believe it's coming so quickly!!

My doctor has prescribed 3 weeks of the liquid diet and it's brutal!! I can't understand why my live would need to shrink the same as someone who weighs a lot more than me ... it doesn't make sense, at all.

Have any of you cheated on the shakes?!!

I didn't have an all liquid diet except for the day before surgery. Two weeks prior I was told to have a protein shake for breakfast, piece of fruit for snack, one lean cuisine or healthy choice frozen meal for lunch with a serving of veggies added and the same for dinner. If I got hungry I would drink another protein shake. I didn't cheat at all because I had a goal and was afraid to stray from what they told me to do. NOt sure if I'd be that strong if it were all liquid.  Good luck!

You're right, it doesn't make any sense for light weights. None. A few days pre-surgery should be plenty. You could low carb the rest of the time.

Good luck!  : )

My surgeon just asked that I avoid all simple carbs and sugar and to eat low fat real meals for 2 weeks prior to surgery.  I was admitted into the hospital the night before my surgery and they served me 2 slices of ham and some sort of pasta salad!  I started that pre-op diet 5 weeks before my surgery (I was on a waiting list for a cancellation and I wanted to be as shrunk as possible!) and I lost 18 lbs!  This was incredibly motivating for me and I think has made it easier for me to deal with the incredibly boring post-op eating plan.  Try to look on the bright side - every pound you loose now, you don't have to loose later! broken heart

Good luck with your surgery!   Ashley

I didn't have pre op liquid diet either. I could eat up until 9pm the night before my surgery.

Wow, it seems to be the norm here in Ontario that there is some sort of liquid diet. It certainly is brutal!!

How long were you ladies off work as well?

Every Dr and group has their own take on what to do.  We have 4 weeks of 5 optifast shakes a day and one small food meal.  You will get through it.  If you have to eat, do so with caution and thought.  This is not the time for last dinners.
