Pre-op Wellness Class

Nov 17, 2011

Another requirement down, woohoo! It makes me happy every time I can check off another class or event on my list of Things To Do Before Surgery Can Be Approved. This class focused on fitness mostly with just a touch of nutrition. Knowing how to exercise has never really been a huge problem for me (just like we all know how to eat right, we just don't and/or can't), but it was good to be reminded of things that I had forgotten over the years since I stopped working out regularly. Such as variety is not only the spice of life, it also helps keep you committed to your fitness goals and helps you reach your weight loss goals. I have the tendency to get in a work out rut, probably because it  feels good to get to the point where that 3 mile walk isn't difficult anymore. But the rut is what contributes to stalls. I was reminded  today that our bodies are great, efficient machines. Once a muscle learns a routine, it finds a way to do it with less energy. That's why you've got to keep it interesting and keep your body guessing. Good to remember. I've been working out nearly every day since I started my pre-op diet and I am already in a walk and/or aerobics by DVD rut. Time to shake things up a little. Oh, and add in some strength training. Cannot forget how important muscle mass is to weight loss. More muscle means more calories burned. I truly believe that exercise and conditioning is going to be the key to making surgery a success. And exercise is something that I can do right now to help me later. I know that I'm trying to relearn how to eat, but most likely I won't truly understand my limitations with food until after surgery. It'll be great to already be in a good work out routine before surgery. That way, I won't have to learn how to exercise and be stressing my body out with that at the same time that I'm trying to learn how to eat a new way. That's the plan anyway. And planning is key!

Next stop, pre-op testing, finally. Time to see if my iron levels are coming up. *fingers crossed*
