My 1st week post-op experiences

Dec 28, 2010

Day after surgery (Thursday)  - not bad!  Felt pretty good, very little pain, just really tired.  Finally got to get out of bed and stroll the halls.  No incision pain at all.  Had to prove that I could keep down water, jello, milk and yogurt.  Discharged that afternoon.

Day 2 (Friday)  - feeling a little groggy still, not hungry at all but tummy is bloated and praying for a fart.  Even small sips hurt going down and not getting nearly the amount of fluids or protein, but will keep working at it.  Slept very well in my own bed.

Day 3 (Saturday) - still tough getting those dang liquids down.  Belching like a sailor, but could I please have a fart?  I'm going to have to start picking out baby names soon given the size of my stomach!  Merry Christmas?  Bah humbug!

Day 4 (Sunday) - the toughest day for me so far.  Felt weepy, tired, lacked energy, didn't want to devote the effort to walking or sipping.  Things got better in the afternoon.

Day 5 (Monday)- did better with fluids and discovered that adding unflavored protein to jello, broth, pudding, etc was genious!  In the afternoon, developed a stabbing pain on my right side, just under my rib cage.  Called the nurse and was told to go to the ER.  STILL NO BM or farts and was miserable so they suspected an obstruction.  Nope.  A  leak?  Nope.  A blood clot?  Nope.  Mystery pain prevailed and I was sent home.

Day 6 (Tuesday) - stabbing side ache is better...still there, but better.  Now what is that annoying pain in  my right calf?  Called doctor, said to wait and see how it is tomorrow.  Thought hey!  I'm a week out, let me hop on the scale and see the rewards.  A .5 lb GAIN.  WTF?  It bettter be fluid and it better exit immediately.  And damnit, where are the farts?
