Surgeon Testimonial

Alexander D. Abkin, M.D., F.A.C.S
I guess divine intervention led me to Dr. Abkin. I way on my way with another surgeon when I found out that insurance would cover 0% because he was out of network.

I did my research on ObesityHelp and other forums and found Advanced Laporoscopic Surgeon's. Reading one review made me choose Dr. Abkin - a reader said she saw god in his eyes. That had a profound affect on me.

After seeing Dr's Bertha and Iannace for follow-ups in the hospital I now know that any of them would be an excellent choice for a surgeon. These doctors work as a team during the operation and it works out great.

Dr. Abkin is very professional and very smart. He has a very nice disposition and listens well to you. He's concerned about your needs and addresses all of them.

He explained all the risks / benefits of the surgery to me. His surgical competence and bedside manner are both great.

I would rate him a 10 out of 10.

If I had to do all this over again I would and I would choose Dr. Abkin again.

I am almost 2 month post op now and have had only 1 glitch, which was a small leak from one incision about 2 weeks post op. That was quickly addressed and just a faded memory already. I have lost 53 lbs since surgery in 56 days. What can be better than that!

I am now walking daily 45-60 minutes or more and am starting strength training tonight.

God bless Dr. Abkin along with doctors Bertha and Iannance.

Past 10 Month's Out
on August 23, 2010 4:22 am
Hi everyone,

Here is my  update at past ten month's out:

I am now down to 186.2 lbs.  That is a loss of 186.3 lbs overall, 163.3 lbs from the actual surgery date.
My waist is now a 34!  I was a 36 at 8 and 9 month's out, a 38 at 7 month's out, a 40 at 6 month's out, a 42 at 5 months out, a 44 at 4 months out and 56 before I started this journey.

I seem to still be losing, although very slowly even though I am happy at where I am.

I have started to incorporate some jogging during my weekend walks.

Yardwork is much more easy for me these days.

I also used to be a sweater.  Now sometimes I see people complain about the humidity and that they are all wet, but not me!

Until next time...

9 Month's Out
on July 12, 2010 11:03 am
Hi everyone,

Here is my 9 month update:

I am now down to 195.2 lbs.  That is a loss of 177.3 lbs overall, 154.3 lbs from the actual surgery date.
My waist is still a 36.  I was a 38 at 7 month's out, a 40 at 6 month's out, a 42 at 5 months out, a 44 at 4 months out and 56 before I started this

Things have slowed down lots this past month as I only lost 4 lbs in a month.
Even though I'm not a 34 waist yet I can fit into 34 jeans, but they don't fit great, so I will prod forward and look towards next month.

I have increased my weekend walks to about 7 miles a day.  Weekdays I only seem to get 30-45 min of walking.

8 Month's Out
on June 13, 2010 11:31 am
Hi everyone,

Here is my 8 month update:

I have surpassed my dietician's goal of 212.
I am now down to 199.4 lbs.  That is a loss of 173 lbs overall, 150 lbs from the actual surgery date.
My waist is now a 36.  I was a 38 at 7 month's out, a 40 at 6 month's out, a 42 at 5 months out, a 44 at 4 months out and 56 before I started this
I can now buy size L polo shirts and shorts.
I reached a mini goal of weighing less that 200 lbs.
The knee is fully recovered from my surgery.  I'm back to walking.
I've had people not even recognize me.  It's been great.
I know I'll reach the new 195 lb goal and set yet another one!

Next month I *hope* to be a size 34 waist.  The 36 pants I have now are not snug at all.

About 7 month's out
on May 8, 2010 4:31 pm
Hi everyone,

So sorry I haven't been signing on to OH.  I sorta got hooked on Facebook and I've been busy with the kids activities.
Today May 8th at 4 days shy of 7 month's out here's my update:

I am 4.5 lbs shy of my dietician's goal of 212.  But I'm not going to stop here.  I'll stop when the weight loss stops.
I am now down to 216.5 lbs.  That is a loss of 156 lbs overall, 133 lbs from the actual surgery date.
My waist is now a 38.  I was a 40 at 6 month's out, a 42 at 5 months out, a 44 at 4 months out and 56 before I started this journey.
My shirt size is still at XL.
I reached a mini goal of weighing less that 220 lbs.

I did have a another stall this past month.  But I did still lose 9 lbs since being 6 month's out.
Next month I *hope* to be a size 36 waist, but I recently had knee surgery to repair a torn meniscus and havn't been able to walk .

Here are pictures I promised that were *just* taken:

6 Months Out
on April 12, 2010 3:52 am
I am 6 Months out today, April 12th, 2010.
I am now down to 225.5 lbs.  That is a loss of 147 lbs overall, 124 lbs from the actual surgery date.
My waist is now a 40.  I was a 42 at 5 months out, a 44 at 4 months out and 56 before I started this journey.
I am also now wearing 1X shirts and undershirts comfortably now.
Lots of folks who I haven't seen almost didn't recognize me.  It was a good feeling.
This past month I succeeded in losing more than the my wife weighs .
I also reach a mini goal of weighing less that 230 lbs.

I did have a stall where I had only lost 3 lbs in 12 days, but I just about made up for it during the last part of the month.

Looking forward to getting into the 30's waist size clothes soon hopefully and getting under 220 for sure for next month's check in.  I'll add a picture when I can get someone to snap a good one of me.

I just recently bought some new clothes for summer and also smaller stuff to plan the next size down.
For fun I tried on a button down 1X shirt and it fit.
I am wearing it today! Whoo hooo...

It's a great day today for me!

I achieved the following goals today:
. Lose more weight than my wife ways
. Weight less than 240 lbs (239.3 now)
. Be able to buy clothes in any store I want (I'm starting to buy size 40's in preparation for the next level down)

The doctors goal of 210 is now less than 30 lbs away, but I won't stop there.  I'm going to shoot to be less than 200 lbs.

4 Month's Out
on February 12, 2010 5:39 pm
Hello Everyone,

Today is my 4 month anniversary from my RNY surgery on October 12, 2009.

I have lost 92 lbs since the surgery and 115 lbs total from the pre-op diet (Nutrisystem Men's Diabetic).

I have so much more energy.

Gone are the days of rocking myself to get up out of a couch.

I can now RUN after the kids, especially when they're being fresh ;)

I can run up flights of steps without getting out of breath.

The stairs don't creak anymore when I am walking up and down them!

My knee pain that I had is a thing of the past.

My back no longer hurts after 6-7 hours of sleeping.

My blood pressure meds (I was taking 2) are gone.

I get having to buy new clothes... I went from a size 56 to a size 44 as of now. 3X pants from Casual Male were getting tight on me before this.  I had several 4X shirts before and now I am into 2X shirts.  My 2X winter coat is getting rather roomy as well.  I have donated my old clothes through freecycle.org.

I drink a little over 100oz a day (Thanks Krissy on the water tip - your weight divided by 2).

I've had many people tell me how good I look now, but I tell them... "I'm not done yet!" :)

I've met so many nice people through my support groups and here on OH.

I'm even thinking of being a coach on my son's football team next season.

Here is what I look like now... For before pics look at my photos
