My Surgery Experience

Jun 10, 2012

On June 7 I had RNY at Community Hospital in Indianapolis.  My surgeon, Dr. Mimms was excellent.  Everyone there was very professional and comforting.  I was scared as I entered the OR.  Seeing the DaVinci robot in the corner was very surreal.  This machine was going to be in my belly guiding Dr. M all the way.  Before I knew it, I was off to dreamland.  Other than some scar tissue from a previous ectopic pregnancy, the procedure went very smoothly.  Soon, I was in recovery, struggling to wake up.

That first day was very foggy and nauseating.  Anesthesia generally makes me sick.  With the help of the medical team, they made sure I was well medicated.  I asked about walking and only got as far as the bathroom and my bed.  That evening a wonderful nurse named Anna made sure I got out of the bed and did a few laps around the unit.  It felt so good!

Friday and Saturday seemed to go by very fast.  I walked, slept, ate and walked, slept, and ate some more.  My only complaint was that I could have used a little variety in the clear liquids department.  The chicken broth was the best I'd ever tasted, but after a while, the green jello was not appealing.  By the end of my stay, the nurses commented on the number of times, I had walked by.  That was pretty cool.  There were a few others recovering from RNY on the floor and we banded together to create a walking crew.  That was a lot of fun and I really enjoyed the camaraderie.

Today is my first full day at home.  I slept too late today and missed my breakfast and pain meds.  BIG MISTAKE!  By the time I had my food prepared I was nauseous and very emotional.  Thank goodness my mom is here to support me.  She helped me get back on track and encouraged me to get back on OH for some support.  So now it is time to rest, then back to my pattern of eat, walk and sip.   Although I am hitting a rough patch today, I am still happy that I had the surgery and am looking forward to sunnier days ahead.
