Learning painful lessons of "Dumping"

Oct 29, 2010

I am learning many lessons on eating foods with starch, sugar, carbs, etc.  When I was diagnosed with diabetes a year ago I had to learn a new way to eat.   I try to eat that way now and I get thrown into a hypoglycemic or "dumping" episode.  My heart rate goes sky high... my blood sugar soars...and it is like an On/Off switch...I am down for the count for about an hour.

At last night 's GSH WLS meeting the long-time success Gastric Bypass people explained this process and that I need rethink completely how I eat.  Before I could have alittle sugar and carbs, but now I should try my best to stay completely away from them... cuz once the sugar gets in my system my body doesn't know how to regulate the sugar anymore and it goes into a harsh hypoglycemic state.  Bummer... I like (no love) sugar and carbs!    What I haven't learned is what do I do when it happens?  Do I just put up with the pain? and sleep? or is there a way to counter act the process?  I am still trying to find answers to this question.

I also, learned my multivitamins with both calcium and iron cancel out each other so I am not getting my Calcium or my iron... I need to rethink all this and get new vitamins (again).

4 weeks post op

Oct 26, 2010

Now, that I am 4 weeks post op and permanently released 40lbs  I am starting to feel better.  I am having to completely relearn how and what to eat.  Whenever I have any sugar based food I go into a hypoglycemic funk.  I feel very sick, clammy and can barely function.   So, I try my best not to eat any sweets or juice with sugars.  I am starting to get back into daily business,  but my energy level is very low.  I am taking all my vitamins and getting the 60-80g protein a day...but my body reminds me I am still recovering.  My husband doesn't like it but I am doing my best to speed up the process.

I can't believe that Halloween is this weekend, cuz this month has flown by...but

                                    H  A  P  P  Y     H  A  L  L  O  W  E  E  N!

Had my 2 week Post Op appt today

Oct 15, 2010

Yeah... I got the "good job" thumbs up from Ben and Dr. Zare today.  Yeah!

They both said I was on the road to recovery and could move up to a soft diet...Woo Hoo!  Here I come Sushi Boat!

Well, I tried... we went to Sushi Boat and Frank (Sushi master) made me my favorite, but I just could not eat it.  The sauce on top of the imitation crab meat on top of a shrimp then baked was just too much for me to eat.  My taste buds and tolerance of heavy sauces are not there yet (if at all again). Bummer.  Even the miso soup tasted weird and I could not eat that either. Bummer x2.

So, off to McDonald's for a plain hamburger to share with my black Lab (Jake).  Don't worry he ate the most ... I think I got a quarter and a few fries... it was tasty but not something I could do too much... I am sooooooooooooo wiped out now I need to take a nap so my body can digest the food. ZZZZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

13 days post op - tired and weak

Oct 11, 2010

I am feeling pretty good.  I am only in pain when I move to a position that hurts, but mostly I am feeling weak and tired.  My left side of my stomach hurts when I do to much or anytime I eat anything, but when I eat something it seems like someone has turned my "on/off" button off and I crash.  After an hour nap I feel better but then it is time to eat again...then off again.  I wonder if anyone else has this problem.

1wk post op - now a change in bowels

Oct 07, 2010

I have been doing pretty good this past week with the full liquids and yogurt, but yesterday I added alittle cheese, mashed potatoes, ultra thin ham slice which was fabulous, and helped me get closer to my protein levels... but I also haven't had a bm of any kind since the day before I changed the diet.  So, is the lack of bm due to the change of food or just part of the process?  Hummmm.... I called the doctor and he said to take Metramucil 2 times a day and try colace (stool softner) so maybe this is all normal?  Who knows...

Is it hard for everyone to hear people eat? Chew?

Oct 04, 2010

I am trying to not smell or look at the food, but it is the hardest when I hear family chewing their dinner.  My husband has been great about making his own dinner so I don't have too, but I feel so left out that I can't chew or eat anything.  I know it is mental and a huge challenge I have to get trough, but at this time with only full liquids on my meal plate... it is driving me crazy.

Is anyone else having this problem?
