Home at last...

Apr 14, 2010

Well, my surgery went well! I was a little nervous because I forgot to take my laxative at 3pm and I was afraid that it would mess up my surgery. The doctor told my husband that it took longer than expected. I will ask him why when I go for my 2-week follow-up. I was walking around on the first day, which was not fun, but helped relieve the gas I was feeling. I didn't opt for any pain meds since I was afraid that I would push myself too hard if I did. The pain wasn't excruciating, just bothersome. By the second day, I was doing much better and looking forward to some water! I was extremely thirsty! I was told I couldn't start stage one till the next day. I was swabbing my mouth with the tiny sponge on a stick, but nothing could replace that nice refreshing sip of water. That day my sons were coming to visit me in the hospital, so I opted for some pain meds just so they wouldn't see me cringe in pain. My sister came and even a friend from work. I got flowers and a dragon stuffed animal. I felt like I had support from the people around me. It was nice.  Finally on the 3rd (and final) day in the hospital, I got to drink 2 ozs of water!!! it was fantastic. I have never known water to taste so damned good!!! Wow. :) By 12 o'clock, I was drinking broth and had some jello. I felt good. I am not sure if I got enough water on my first day since I didn't think to keep track of how much water I was drinking at the hospital, so I was unsure what I had thru the day, I am going to make sure I drink enough to stay hydrated and I get to start stage 3 today!! yay, protein shakes! I know, there's a good chance I won't be saying that in 2 weeks, but it's how I feel now. I made sure I have the full variety of "foods" available for the stage 3 diet so I won't want anything else.
Last night, my husband was cooking dinner. And let me tell you, it smelled GOOD. But I'll be honest with you. I had no desire to eat any of it. I had my strawberry jello and drank my water and I was fine. Will it always be like that? Probably not. But it's a start. today I woke up and started drinking. I feel good! Haven't had to take any of the pain meds, tho I wasn't thrilled with being unable to sleep in my bed. After being away from my husband for 3 days, I was really looking forward to snuggling up next to him, but when I tried to lay in our bed, I was uncomfortable. And he couldn't put his arm around me because of my incisions. Not to mention that I had to keep my legs moving while I slept so I could avoid blood clots. So for the time being, I will be sleeping in a reclined position in the living room. The cat is happier about that than I am. So after I write this, I am going for a walk. Not sure how far I will be able to go or if I'll be able to get back (lol) but I am going. And when I come back, protein shake time.
Hope all is well with my fellow April 12th-ers and please update me with your progress!
Love you all and God bless.
