Surgeon Testimonial

Stephen V. Hamn M.D. F.A.C.S
Dr. Hamn is great! His office staff is very helpful and always helpful when I had questions. I was disappointed at first when I wasn't losing weight as fast as I 'thought' I should be but Dr.Hamn kept me on track and over time the weight loss has been steady and I am thrilled with where I am now!rn rnI think surgical competance is important, but lap band is a tool and if you are going to be sucessful you have to have a good surgeon and office staff that is going to support you and help keep you on track after your surgery.

I am divorced, 55, and live in Plano Texas. Haven't updated my site here in a long time.. last spring/summer started having problems with my lap band. I had gone from 287 down to 177 but had problems with my band slipping. Ended up with aspiration pneumonia twice (they didn't figure out it was related to lap band til second time in hosptal), Luckily my insurance approved a revision to remove the band and revise it to a gastric sleeve. That was this past November. I am now down to 146 and feel great!
The extra weight I've lost has helped my knees .. (had knee replacement surgery) and in the process of all the hospitalizations for the pneumonia.. they discovered two growths in one of my kidneys. Ended up taking my left kidney out.. but the growths were both cancerous but they had not spread yet. So looks like they caught that just in time. End result.. I feel great. My health has never been better!!!! Dr. Hamn is amazing!

Need to take more photos!
on May 19, 2009 5:39 am
I really need to take some more photos. Had my last band adjustment in early May (prev one was 14 months before).. I had been maintaining for 5 - 6 months but had not been losing. Well, have started losing again.. actually due to a severe bout with bronchitus and some problems with the liquid medicines I have to take causing me to lose my appetite.. I have lost faster than I should be.. but hopefully that will settle down soon. This bronchitus is sure hard to kick though!  Can get into my size 12's .. even bought a pair of size 12 shorts that fits really good! My daughter and I are supposed to go camping for Memorial day weekend with a group of families from our church.. I sure hope I feel good enough to go. My daughter actually picked going on this camping trip over going to her senior prom!! So we will go... bronchitus and all! LOL! Will try to take some more pics and upload them.. people at work say they can tell I've lost more weight. Aside from some of my clothes being a tad looser though, I really can't tell .. my 14's fit great or are a bit loose.. my 12's fit pretty good although there are a pair or two that still have a bit of belly hanging over when they are buttoned up.. not as bad now though. If I could fit into my 12's with no belly hang over then I would be perfectly happy... I don't want to look starved or be a stick.. just want to be a healthy weight that I can maintain and will let me be active and go camping and hiking and biking. My regular doctor says between 150 and 160 but not lower.. so with a goal of 150.. I am 10 lbs away now! Hurrah!

still here.. 16 lbs from my goal weight!!
on May 6, 2009 8:06 am

Haven't posted in quite a while..  went from Nov til April and maintained, but was not able to lose any more. So.. finally decided to go for what will probably be my last band adjustment (prev band adjustment was 16 months before)... and it did help. In last month, I have dropped from about 173 to 166. That is pretty good after going for 6 months with out losing any! Of course, what did make me feel good was that during that 6 months when I wasn't losing, I wasn't gaining any back either,  So that gave me some confidence that I will be able to keep off the weight I have lost.  Anyway, am going to Connecticut to see my little sister in June.. she had lap band in January and has been going really good.. we have plans to go shopping for new clothes! LOL! Seriously, I haven't been up to Connecticut in 17+ years so am really looking forward to going! None of my relatives up there have seen me in forever.. they are going to be so suprised!

Looking darn good today!
on October 20, 2008 12:53 pm

I know it sounds like I am getting awfully vain.. but I looked in the mirror this morning and thought " I look darn good today".... that is sooooo nice... I found a store whose clothes I really like at the outlet mall near me and they had some terrific deals at 70% off.. and now that I can get back into size 14's.. I found quite a few really great buys. So I was very excited and wore one of my new outfits.. and vain or not.. I really did look pretty darn good! LOL!

First camping trip in years!!
on August 25, 2008 1:34 pm
I am so excited!! I went on my first camping trip in years... I used to go camping a lot when my kids were little. My ex husband and I did everything from tent camping, to a pop up to a big fifth wheel trailer and I really love camping. But after the divorce.. I didn't think I could handle a trailer myself. And I'm 52, have arthritus. etc etc.... I also used to be very much morbidly obese and had knee problems that had me in a wheelchair full time.

My life is so different now.. of course I still have arthrtus.. but after losing over a 100 lbs it's not a trouble some as it used to be. I was able to get knee surgery and can walk now and I have a lot more energy than a year ago when I got my band.

So one thing I decided to do for myself was to do something  I loved.. (my reward to myself for doing so good with the weight loss and getting my health back!!).. and I bought a very small used travel trailer. It is really only big enough for 1 or 2 people, but I can haul it with my trooper and figured it would work for me.

This past weekend I went on my first camping trip in it..I am so proud!! I got it hooked up by myself (had to get in and out of truck a lot to make sure I was lined up when I was trying to hitch it up.. but I did it!!), I got it set up at the campsite all by myself and when it was time to go I got it ready to go, hooked it up again.. even emptied the tanks at the dump station all by myself!! I had a wonderful time.. and my golden retriever went along and he had a wonderful time too!

A year ago I would not have ever thought I'd go camping again! I had such a great time!

My Story

Sure wish I had found this site a year ago!!  I have struggled with weight problems all my life.. I actually lost quite a bit years and years ago through weight watchers, but never got quite to goal and ended up gaining it all back plus some.

Then with arthritus and knee problems, I ended up in a wheel chair and was totally unable to exercise which made losing weight even harder. In addition, I needed to lose a substantial amount of weight to have a better chance of my knee replacement surgery being sucessful.

So last August I got lap band. The weight loss was slower than I expected at first, but it has been coming off steadily. I am down 102 lbs from my high just before my sugery and getting close to my goal. I think this is the most dangerous point for me though.. in the past every time I've gotten down to this point it seems like I'm less motivate to try and I either plateau or start slipping back into my old bad habits.

I am hoping with the lap band, I can keep that from happening this time!! I have worked very hard to be sucessful with the lap band.. no chocolate or sweets, no milkshakes or french fries.. I try to eat healthy foods and no junk. So far so good.. but need to make my new healthy eating habits permanent because I don't ever want to gain all that weight back again!
