Results of sleep study, Physical Therapy, Nutritionist, fasting

Aug 14, 2010

It's  been a while since I updated.  I am now 176 pounds. Still a size 18.  I can squeeze into a 16 but it sure isn't comfortable. It's getting much more difficult to stick to the fast.

I had the sleep study with OHSU on July 20th.  They confirmed that I do not have sleep apnea.

On the 21st I went to the support group, which was about plastic surgery.  I found out it's 70K to remove the sagging skin left after WLS.  I guess I'll keep the saggy skin because I sure can't afford that making 17K per year!

On July 23rd I saw the Nurse practitioner at Legacy weight Management Institute, who thinks a gastric bypass is appropriate for me.

On July 29th, I went to the welcome group.  It was mostly about lap band, very little about gastric bypass, and nothing about revision surgery.  But it's another requirement so I was happy to get it out of the way.

August 6th I went to see the dietician, who has already cleared me  for surgery and said to keep doing what i am doing.  I have now  completed the 'three months supervised diet' requirement.  She thinks the endocrinologists fast is a little too strict and told me to add another 100 calories and 15 grams of protein to my diet.  (yay) Hopefully that will help me sleep because I shouldn't be starving all night.

On the 11th I went back to the sleep clinic at OHSU to get the results of the sleep study.  Now that they have ruled out apnea they will start treating my insomnia. They prescribed Ambien, which is good because I now fall asleep in 20 minutes instead of two hours, but bad because I wake up MUCH earlier so I am much more tired by the end of the day.  This makes it harder to exercise and follow the diet.  I've also noticed I am having mood swings now.  Since the ambien is the only thing I'm doing differently, I believe it is the cause.

On Friday the 13th I went to see Dr. Raum's assistant, who isn't convinved I need surgery because she weighs more than I do (she's also much taller and has no co-morbs). Fortunately it is not up to her.   She said she would discuss my weight loss and medication dosages with Dr. Raum and get back to me but she didn't call back.  I called their office near the end of the day but she had gone home so I don't know what the recommendation is.  Do I stay on the fast?  Is my journey over because I will be approved for surgery now?  Is my journey over because I have been deemed ineligible?  I hate going the whole weekend without answers to these questions. It's very depressing.  The person I spoke to did say she would find out on Monday and call me back.  I'm still rather disappointed in the lack of organization at OWLS.
