Happy Sunday Morning Nancee, I've suffered from FM for at least 10 years, probably longer since it was only first diagonosed in 1992 but I'd had all the symptoms long before that. In addition to FM, I was MO, had hypertension, arthritis and suffered a great depression since my mother passed away in 1990. My doctor put me on medications to help with the muscle pains and to help me get the "restorative sleep" that is required by the human body, but which we, with FM, don't get. I took the meds for a long time, but didn't really notice a lot of improvement. Since I worked long hours and have an extremely tension-filled job, my doctor insisted that I get off a rotating 12-hour shift if (I-F) I wanted to continue living. Well, that was easier said than done, however two years ago, my schedule was changed, and I now work an 8-hour day...a lot more like a "normal" person. The FM has improved and I no longer take the pain or sleep meds. I am still taking the BP and arthritis meds, but am hoping to at least get off the BP meds soon. My FM symptoms have improved greatly, especially since the WLS (5/20/02) and the loss of 50+ pounds. You must really have an in-depth talk with your surgeon and explain to him the "flare-up" you have had in the past without your meds. Unless what you are taking is really a bad stomach irritant, you will be able to continue taking your meds - at the hospital they will crush them up and put them into a liquid (tastes awful, but better than pain). You might have to crush your meds at home for 6-8 weeks, but that's not too bad considering the alternative. Hope these comments have been somewhat helpful. You are paying BIG BUCKS to save your life - talk to your doctor, his assistants, his nurses - make yourself HEARD. Good luck with your approval and getting a surgery date soon.
