J.M. Parekh

"August 2, 2001. Dr. Parekh, compassionate and caring, down to earth. Six months ago, I had my first consultation on August 2, 2001, at 10:45 a.m. Of course I was nervous and anxious so much so I had a lumps in my throat and palpitations. I went to his office well prepared, thanks to the Morbid obesity site and my research on the subject. Guelph is a University Town, 90 kilometres from Toronto. My decision to go to Dr. Parekh is simple: good references and an hospital outside big Toronto Centres where in smaller cities, the stress on smaller hospitals is much less. I know that for fact. The outcome of my first consultation was very positive. I didnt have lots of questions to ask. However, I went to this consultation with a serious handicap so I taught: my age and of course it was my first question. No problem, Dr. Parekh operates on patients until the age of 60. I am pushing 58 in December (2001)! Dr. Parekh asked the questions, lots of them, probably to judge and study personality, various problems I might have, state of mind, knowledge about this surgery, support from family and friends, medical history, occupation, transoprtation (how would I get to Guelph and back to Toronto), obesity family history, possibly and surely plastic surgery after loosing all the weight, which we had a good laugh about it regarding breast reconstruction. I showed him the binder, results of my research on WLS,he found it well organized. Patiently, we discussed all aspects of the surgery. He also wants to meet with members of my family which wouldnt be a problem. During this consultation, my anxiety disapeared like magic. However, I have to go to Guelph for an endoscopy on December 4 and quit smoking (which took me 4 months to accomplish). My surgery will be decided upon the results of this test. I will then be put on a waiting list. Dr. Parekh also told me that I would make the cancellation list which made me smile. I am so ready for this. Waiting 6 months for the first consultation, and waiting 4 months for an endoscopy test, and waiting for your turn, if everything goes well. Waiting is a killer. But I made it through the first consultation. I will make it for the rest of it as well. On December 4, arrangements will be made by the staff to the endoscopy test and meeting with a nutritionist. I will need somebody with me to bring me back to Toronto as it appears this test is a tough one. At the end of the consultation, I received a survey-quetionnaire and booklet describing the all aspects of the procedure, before surgery, during surgery and after-care surgery, follow-ups, vitamines and minerals, etc. The few questions remaining to ask were all clear. I am ready, so ready!"
