James M. Kane Jr.

"I found out about Dr.s Kane Sr/Jr. through an advertisement on my DSS TV system. So I didn't meet them until the day before my surgery. All of my pre op testing was done in KY where I was living at the time. I was very comfortable with Dr. Kane Sr. whom I met when we arrived. He answered all of my questions and said that my skin should not be a problem and that it should snap back. It was then that I found out that Dr. Rantis their new partner was going to preform my surgery under the Dr.s Kane's supervision. I was fine with this and Dr. Rantis seemed to be a fine Dr. as well. I had a complication in that they found a liver tumor the size of my fist that they removed so I was in surgery for 5 1/2 hrs. My mother went with my because I wasn't allowed to drive after the surgery. They assured her that everyhthing was fine and explained the liver tumor was a minor complication but that it didn't interfere with my gastroplasty. My Dr.s are wonderful surgeons. Following the surgery I stayed in a hotel in Chicago until my outer staples were removed. The Dr.s were still good to me. And advised me that I could call after I returned home to KY. with any questions or concerns I had. Please keep in mind that this is what MY PERSONAL experience was like and that every case and every person is different, But after I returned home to KY things changed. The first few months were fine. I called with updates and wrote w/photos. I was concerned when I hadn't lost as much weight as I had thought I should so I called Dr. Rantis who was also alarmed that I was loosing so slowly. Dr. Kane made a return call to me to let me know that all was well and some ppl just respond slower. Thing picked up after my body got through the "I'm gonna hold on to everything I can because you have changed me thing". My progress was fine. However; soon NONE of my questions or letters about anything, the excessive repulsive hanging skin, the updates and photos were ever answered. (I even sent thankyou ties after my first year of success. ((I have a tigger tattoo on my belly and they all loved it so I sent them tigger ties) I didn't even recieve acknowledgement that they had gotten them.) I didn't want a huge response just some answers. I was told that they had good relationships with the out of state patients they had so that my situation was not that different, but it was like because I was an out of state patient that I was in circular file 13. I guess no complaints or problems health wise warranted no response from them. So the surgery itself was fine, but no kudos on follow up. My opinion would be that maybe ppl who are in their area will recieve better follow up but those who are not going to be spending more $ on office visits or consultations might as well go somewhere near their home. I did not feel as though they handled MY aftercare well at all. Especially on the redundant skin. I had NO idea of how repulsive it would be or that it would make me feel like it does. And none of my questions on this subject would be answered afterwards. I was only told that it should snap back because of my age and that exercise would help. Not the case and no help from them on what to do about it. I didn't even know that it was called redundant skin and that it was not a cosmetic proceedure until yesterday. (my surgery was in 1996) I'm not saying that they treat all of their cases this way but MY personal experience on follow up as an out of state patient is not what I had hoped it would be. Their surgical competence in comparison to where I lived at the time was wayyyyy up there on the ***** rated list. That is why I went to CHICAGO from Rineyville KY to have the gastroplasty done. Office staff was fine. Whew!! I'm sorry but I am thrilled with my actual surgery and weight loss of 137lbs, but I feel as though I was cheated on the information I needed about the redundant skin. I had no idea it would be like this and that it would be so repulsive."
