DEAREST KELLY: Wow - your story sounds so similar to mine! I went to a local ER on Nov. 29 in extreme pain (I had also thrown up before that - for the first time ever). I wanted to get to my surgeon's ER (some 28 miles away) but I couldn't even sit up by myself. So, I figured I'd get 'stabilized' and get some much-needed pain meds and then request a transfer to Mt. Sinai. It was pure hell! I informed them to contact my surgeon (he even called the ER there) but they didn't get back to him until SIX HOURS LATER!!!! By the time I was finally transferred, I was vomitting BLOOD. I was in such unbelievable extreme pain! They wouldn't give me any more pain meds after the first few times because my 'pain page was full'. I can't believe I suffered through that! Turns out, I had an almost-fatal strangulated hernia/complete intestinal blockage. I went into emergency surgery in the wee hours of November 30. My surgeon, Dr. Herron (through the grace of God), saved my LIFE. He removed 3-4 feet of necrotized intestines (ouch!), resected (put them back together), did an appendectomy for good measure and also revised my earlier (lap) BPD/DS (he left the common channel the same for maximum malapsorption but lengthened the alimentary limb from 250 to 300 cm to maximize protein absorption). Thank GOD! :) So, I totally know what you mean about pompous local doctors who dont' know what the heck they are doing! I had experienced two previous episodes, one where I almost passed out while teaching and visited a local ER. AFter about 45 min-1 hour of pain and dizziness, I felt absolutely fine. Turns out an internal hernia can 'slip in and out' of it's position. Even a CTSCAn may not fully confirm the bowel obstruction. I'm so GLAD my surgeon finally got a hold of those idioso and talked some sense into them. After half a day of pure torture, suffering and having absolutely NOTHING done for me (except an IV -- without any pain meds!), I was transferred to Mt. Sinai at about 2 a.m. I was in surgery by 5:30. I needed 4-5 blood transfusions in the OR and one (that I remember) in the ICU. I am so grateful to be here! I'm sure you are, too. Please take care of yourself, rest up and recover. You are in my thoughts and prayers... All the best, Teresa Noverr-Chin (preop: 307 lbs/bmi 45 now: 143 lbs/bmi 20)
