I did not come to WLS down the "typical" path. About 6 years ago, I was diagnosed with an autoimmune disorder. It is called Autoimmune Hepatitis and is very similar to Lupus but it only attacks the liver. Due to this I was put on steroids and immunosuppressant. These meds contributed to a 150-200 pound weight gain over a 5 year period. When I would get off the steroids, I could get the weight off but while one them, nothing would get the weight off and everything I lost would come right back. Now I am on them for the rest of my life. Due to this, my doctor asked that I get a gastric sleeve. For me, this procedure removes the part of the stomach the steroids stimulate. The goal is to get to a "normal" weight just in case I need a transplant. At my current weight I would not be eligible to be on the transplant list.

For me, like others, I really had no choice and really did not do my homework on the procedure. I have a wonderful medical team and trusted my doctors when they asked me to do this. Now I am at the other end, having had the procedure and I am researching exactly what I have gotten myself into.

I look forward to meeting people here and sharing stories and strength.

Hugs to all.
