Roux-en-y changed my life

Jun 06, 2011

So, I had lapband surgery in Dec. 2005 and I was 341 lbs. I succeeded in getting down to about 250 but slowly started gaining back. I was not compliant with my band (ex: drank sodas, didn't get fills, overate, etc). Well I decided after having an endoscopy that my band had to come out as it had shifted and was causing erosion. All my fault and I accepted the fact that I did the band too young and didn't have enough willpower to control myself to my addiction to food. After thinking about it I had my band removed in November of 2010 and the doctor did a revision to roux-en-y. On the day of surgery I was 281 lbs. and as I speak with you today I am 191. I have lost 90 lbs in 6 months (7 months on the 22nd) and it was a battle getting there but I'm so thankful I did it. I was given a 2nd chance to start over. I ended up having to have 2 additional surgeries following the one in November due to adhesions and a bowel obstruction and spent several weeks over the course of 4 months in the hospital and out of work. I honestly look back though and realize that throughout that horrible time I was put through it for a reason. I feel like if it wasn't for the struggle I would have never realized how addicted to food I was. With the roux-en-y I get sick now if I eat fried foods or too much ice cream (my weaknesses). It's like instant punishment that I didn't experience with the band. I have met with a dietician and now eat at least 60 g of protein, I drink nothing but water (I have tea occasionally), and try to avoid unhealthy foods/fast foods as much as possible. I have a trainer and go to the gym at least 3x/wk. I joined this forum for support because just like any addiction you have good and bad days. Somedays the food wins and somedays I do. My goal is to successfully lose enough weight and plateau and eventually have an abdominoplasty and possibly get my arms done. If anyone has any questions or wants to know anything about my experience let me know. I'm not shy! :)
