I guess my story starts out like many others. I have been overweight my whole life, regardless of my physical activity & athleticism. I played basketball, soccer, have been a soccer referee, and still horseback ride, swim and work out whenever I get the chance (I make room for at least the latter 2). I would love to be able to do more, especially being in science (biology), I love the outdoors, so I would love to go camping, hiking, canoing, skiing, sailing, SCUBA diving, etc... but of course, being overweight definitely unfortunately puts a limit on certain things.

So even though I wasn't able to do much of the physical activities I enjoy, during my four undergrad years at SUNY Oneonta I threw myself into my academics & extracurricular activities by becoming Editor-in-Chief of the weekly college newspaper, Advertising manager, photographer, started up a National Biological Honors Society (Beta Beta Beta, Theta Nu) & was president of that for 2 years, member of Omicron Delta Kappa, Phi Eta Sigma, and the National Residence Hall Honorary, President of the Association of Secondary Educators. I was also a Resident advisor for my last two years @ college. Even though I worked out, not as often as I do now, I still managed to gain about 90 pounds in college...not cool... Most of it was probably due to stress, and obviously the OH SO HEALTHY selections of food at the College cafeterias... :-(  So when I graduated in May '06, I made myself a promise that I would never weigh as much as I did that day, and since then (and before) have been researching various options. Lap-Band first came to mind, only because I was so afraid of the malabsorption factor, especally since MS runs in my family, but have decided on going for the whole deal, the Roux-en-Y gastric bypass. I feel I would be most successful and not tempted by stupid little things and ultimately fail.

As many people, I have tried many many diets, from Atkins when I was in SEVENTH grade where i lost about 30 lbs to LA Weight loss and most recently Weight Watchers. I lost the most with weight watchers, about 50 lbs since June '05, but gained it all back by January '06.  Since I have been seeing the nutritionist at my bariatric surgery group since June '06 (yes, i need the 6 month dietary history), I have lost about 30 lbs and gained tons of engery and focus. However, I know I can do better....especially since I work out 5 days a week...so I just cannot wait until I have this surgery in January!!! :-)
