I gained around 175 lbs about 5 yrs before my surgery, following a traumatic experience.  I was able to lose 100 lbs prior to surgery, but it became clear that no matter what I did, I could not lose any more.  It was becoming grueling just to hold back the weight regain.  The VSG was originally recommended for me.  But after a ton of research, I decided to switch to RNY.  I am very glad I made that switch, because although RNY is not for everyone, it has been perfect for me.  I do not think VSG would have allowed me to lose as much as I have or to return to the sport of cycling, nor do I believe it would it have cured my high cholesterol and triglycerides to my satisfaction.

I have lost close to 200 lbs from my high.  I ride my bike 300-500 miles per week!  That's a lot, but I really enjoy cycling.  And I burn around 2500 calories a day, so I get to eat a fair amount and still stay thin, at this point at least.  My relationship with food has been restored to a more healthy level, which I have come to believe is incredibly important for mental well being.  Before surgery, I was eating an insanely restricted diet.  Now I can eat almost anything, but I gravitate towards healthy foods because that is what my body honestly craves post-RNY.

I recommend everyone with morbid obesity recognize that it is not their fault and take the step with the only curative option there is, WLS.  And don't shy away from the gold standard, RNY.  It is the most prevalent procedure for a reason.  It combines extremely robust and durable weight loss with long term reductions in comorbidities and a relatively low complication rate.

At this point, I honestly think every day how thankful I am that I had the RNY surgery.  Best decision of my life.
