7/20/2006 Went to my PCP to inquire about Gastric Bypass Surgery.  My PCP said I am a good candidate for the surgery and gave me the referral to see a surgeon.

8/8/2006 Today I attended a Seminar that Dr. Ashraf Hilmy conducted which informed us regarding the surgery and to answer any questions or concerns that we might have.  Attending this seminar was a requirement before the surgeon's appointment.  I am glad I attended, I learned so much and encourage anyone who is considering gastric bypass surgery to attend these seminars.

8/15/2006 Today was my first appointment with the surgeon who will perform my surgery Dr. Ashraf Hilmy. Dr. A. Hilmy is a wonderful surgeon, he was very informative and reminded me to attend this afternoon's Support Meeting.  By the way, the support meeting was great.  I met so many nice people that were post-ops and they were so supportive and the stories of their experiences after surgery eased my mind a lot.

8/17/2006 Sonia from Dr. Hilmy's office asked me to take her any paperwork that would help me be approved for surgery coverage.  I went to my PCP and got his recommendation letter.  I also wrote a letter indicating my need for the surgery and my understanding what consists of this surgery.

8/30/2006 My insurance, BCBS Healthselect, received the fax the surgeon's office faxed for the surgery.

9/5/2006 Called the insurance company and was informed that they needed more information before they determined coverage : ( This really seems to be dragging now.

9/28/2006 Today I called the surgeon's office regarding the additional information the insurance required.  I received a fax copy of the letter the surgeon's office mailed to my insurance on 9/18/2006.  I called my insurance and faxed them the copy that I received from the surgeon's office.

9/29/2006 Called the insurance company, but no word yet : (  Today I weighed myself and I weigh 247, I guess I've lost some weight due to the stress that I am going through....lol.  Well,  we will see what the insurance decides.

10/5/2006 Called the insurance company and I was told the paperwork was received and is being reviewed and to call back tomorrow Friday.  Please pray for me.

10/6/2006 All day I wondered if my insurance was going to approve my surgery.  I waited til the afternoon to make the call, just in case.  At about 4:00pm I could not wait any longer so I made the call to the insurance.
I AM APPROVED :) :) :)
WOW this was great news after waiting so long. I had made so many calls to the insurance company (I made a total of 11 calls since 8/25/2006) but it has finally paid off.  Just like they say persistance pays off :) Now I can begin my exams, psych consult, dietician consult, sonograms, stress test and that famous endoscopy study I have been reading everyone talk about, don't look forward to that one at all lol. Well till next time and Today I am finally seeing me closer to the other side (Soon very soon :))

10/9/2006 Well my weekend was not that great at all.  Regardless to having received great news Friday regarding my approval for gastric bypass surgery from my insurance I did not have a good weekend :( my bf and I are no longer together and he has moved away (Sunday 10/8/2006).  I will really miss him.  I always dreamed he was going to be there for me physically supporting me throughout this journey but life has its way and that will not be possible now :(  At this time I would like to dedicate this profile to him, Reyes Martinez, for being there for me this past 2 years when I really needed someone by my side.

Deep inside I know that our friendship will still keep us together in some way.

10/20/2006 My insurance approval letter from BCBS arrived in the mail : ) now it is time to start having all the required exams before surgery.  I have a Sleep Study on November 3, 2006. Hope everyone is doing fine.  My prayers are with all of you on this journey.

10/27/06 This afternoon I received a call from my surgeon's office indicating they received my approval letter and are waiting for me to let them know when I will be ready for my surgery.  At this point I feel that I have to mend my broken heart in order to be able to go forward.  I hope everyone is doing great.  Pray for me that I find the peace of mind that I need to be involved 100% in this surgery again because so far all I have been doing is feeling a very low self-esteem and suddenly cry with sad emotional songs that I listen to like "My Heart Will Go On" by Celine Dion : (  I know that with time this will get better.  I still read pre and post surgery profiles daily and wish I could have my surgery done like......... yesterday : ) God Bless You ALL.

11/03/06 Cancelled my Sleep Study today and will reschedule at a later date.

11/05/06 Went to the Emergency Room because I was having abdominal and lower back pain.  They diagnosed me with back pain with sciatica hmmmm as for I me I would have diagnosed it as obesity and my body screaming "NO MORE" lol : ) I was told to see my PCP for follow-up.

11/06/06 Called my PCP and made an appointment for tomorrow.

11/07/06 Today I went to my appointment with my PCP.  My PCP scheduled some of the required pre-op exams to start with my journey of having the open Gastric Bypass Surgery.  I think that it is time to continue this journey and I have always put others first and feel that now I have to think of me for once and do this for me in order for me to feel good about myself and be able to enjoy life to its fullest and be there for my daughter and son.

The following are pre-op requirements that my surgeon required for surgery:   Psychologist evaluation, 2D Echo, Cardiologist fee to read 2D Echo, Sleep Study, GallBladder Ultrasound, PFT, Bone Scan, Hospital Fees, Anesthiologist Fees, Dietician/Trainer, CXR, EKG and SAO2, H-Pylori.

My PCP has ordered the following pre-op exams:

11/08/06 Abdominal and Pelvic ultrasound is scheduled for 8:30am at Harlingen Medical Center (HMC). I spoke with a very nice young lady at the registration office of the hospital where the ultrasound will be done and she told me that my BCBS pays 100% (isn't that great!!!).  The pelvic ultrasound is not required but my PCP scheduled it due to lower pelvic pain.

11/30/06 2D Echo 8:30am at Heart Clinic $30.00 co-pay (includes Cardiologist Fee).

11/30/06  Sleep Study is scheduled for 8:00pm at HMC $50.00 + payment arrangement. The total cost for this study is $2,490.00 and my 20% is 498.00 + 250.00 (my yearly deductible) = $748.00

12/11/06 Psychiatric appointment 11:00am with Dr. Collier $25.00 co-pay. There is an additional charge of $75.00 for interpretation once the report is ready for pick-up.

11/21/06  Went to the Support Group Meeting at 7:00pm. Spoke with Sonia regarding my surgery.  Hopefully I can have surgery January 15, 2007.  Sonia will call me back and let me know if I can be scheduled for that day : )  I think I am ready to have my surgery now.

11-22-06 Took some before pictures today (see above).  Wow am i BIG (256lbs)   : (   Hope everyone has a Wonderful and Safe Thanksgiving.

11-25-06 Found this site and thought you might enjoy it:

You can see Dr. Stickler’s profile as listed at www.obesityhelp.com and visit his web site at www.medabolix.com   Watch the "Gastric Bypass Seminar" on the Medabolix site for some good information on weight loss surgery.

11-27-06 @ 4:15pm I spoke with Tina from my insurance (BCBS) and she gave me alot of helpful information regarding the pre-op exams I need to have done and the insurance benefit coverage. It feels so good to get the helpful information from your insurance.  They are the greatest (BCBS).  Everytime I call them they are all so helpful : )  I was told that once I meet my deductible of $250.00 the remaining exams such as the CXR and EKG are $0.00 as long as they are done in a facility other than my physician's office (this avoids the $25.00 - $30.00 co-payment) and if you have it done at a facility such as the hospital the insurance pays 100% of the exams.

11/27/06 @ 8:30pm It's officially OVER : (  relationships do hurt when you are told that it's over snif snif

11-30-2006  @ 8:30am went to the Heart Clinic and had my 2D Echo exam done.

12-01-2006 Today I will have my Sleep Study at Harlingen Medical Center @ 8:00pm.

12-02-2006 Well I had my Sleep Study done last night at Harlingen Medical Center and guess what ???? : ) I couldn't believe it but I sleep the entire night, and all the wires I was hooked up to didn't even bother me.  I was so tired and the environment was so quiet and calm that I slept and I didn't even get up once to go to the bathroom, not even once.  The technician working there was the greatest and he was very polite and answered all of my questions.

12-11-2006 Today @ 9:00am I went for my Physchologist Consult $25.00 copay.  There is also a $75.00 for the reading of the report.  I called BCBS (Diana) and I was told that the Dr's office needs to sent a claim with a CPT code to determine payment.  I called the Dr. office and she will submit a claim but stated that the insurance has never been sent a claim and more than likely I will have to end up paything the $75.00 for the report when I go pick it up in a couple of weeks.  Will keep you posted.

FYI..............My insurance stated that everything that is charged to us from the Dr's office needs to be sent with a claim and no other charge other than a copay should be charged and after the claim if the charge is not covered than it is our responsibility to pay.  ALWAYS!!!!ask that they submit a claim for whatever they are trying to charge you besides the copay...

12-15-2006  This wait is really getting to me grrrrrrrr..............today I weighed myself and I have gained 9 lbs in 1 week, I now weigh 2651/2......how depressing is that : (

12-19-2006 Tonight is our Christmas Party at WLS seminar meetings.  We will be able to see the BEFORE and AFTER pictures of post-ops.  I am looking forward to tonight, my daughter and son will be going with me : )

12-20-2006 Seems like something always happens that you have to make changes.  I have been planning to have this surgery since October and changed it for December then for January 15 then February 12 and now due to work scheduling it seems that I will have to change it one more time for February 19, which is my sister's birthday hmmmm. All these are tentative schedules, I have not given my surgeon an official date due to all the problems I have been foreseeing.  Well anyways, hope this will be the last change because I can't wait to have the surgery...........................grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr................................

12-21-2006 I went to visit my mother yesterday and God Bless Her Heart, I know she means well and only wants the best for me and worries about this surgery and the complications that might come with it. She made a comment that made me very sad and upset at the same time.  She said "Think about your kids" I told her "I am thinking about them and that is one of the reasons why I am want this surgery and that I have my mind set on it....period......".  She then explained that she only wishes me well and is worried about the kids if something goes wrong.  I know she means well, but it's the way things are said and/or at the time they are said that really HURTS!!!!!!!!!  I just changed my video on my profile, I used to have "My Heart Will Go On" with Celine Dion but it was not turning on : ( and I have changed it to "TAKE A CHANCE" by Olivia Newton John and John Travolta because I feel that our whole life it about Taking A Chance : )  Wishing Everyone A Great, Safe, and Happy Holidays.

01-03-2007 Weight = 265 3/4 Hope Everyone had a wonderful  New Year

01-09-2007 Weight = 264

I HAVE A  DATE"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! January 29, 2007 is my scheduled Roux-Y Surgery : )  I see the Surgeon for Pre-Op Instructions on 1/25/07.                      Tomorrow 01/10/07 I go for the remaining labs, CXR, EKG,        H. Pylori, and Initial Dietician Consult at the Surgeon's office.      I hope not to forget to go fasting : )  I was also told that since I have most of my exams done, I might have a sooner date, but I will have to wait.  I will update tomorrow with further updates.  I am so HAPPY : ) I am starting to realize that this surgery is finally going to be performed.

01-10-2007 Went to have Lab work, SA02, and CXR this morning.  I also met with the Dietician.  EKG and PFT will not be done until tomorrow morning 8:30am and that should complete my exams.  I weighed myself in the surgeon's office and I weighed 261 lbs. Went to PCP office to pick up the results of all the exams he had requested and also picked up my Psych evaluation from the Psychiatrist.  After Work, I went to the Surgeon's office to drop off all the results of the exams I had already done.  At that time I was given Bad New and Good News.                                                                                                          The Bad News: I tested positive for H. Pylori and was given a Rx for PREVPAC. Since I have BCBS the coverage for this 14 day regimen was $90.00 : (                                                                The Good News: My surgery has been moved up : ) instead of January 29, 2007 now it is scheduled for January 24, 2007.  I had wanted my surgery to be the month before my birthday of February 24 and it will be EXACTLY 1 month, how great is that!!! After worked went for my last normal meal at Luby's with my daughter and son. Tomorrow I will start my 7 day <20 gm Carb diet.

01-11-2007 This morning I went to have my EKG, PFT and S02 done at the surgeons office.  More bad news : ( my EKG was abnormal : ( I will have to wait and see what the Surgeon wants to do. The Good News: I am finished with my exams and I am ready for surgery, 13 days til' surgery. Made a payment of 921.08 at the surgeon's office for the remainder of my surgery balance. Today I started my 7 day <20 gram Carb diet my weight is 261.

01-16-2007 Weight = 258 Went to weigh at surgeon's office 258 lost 3 lbs in 1 week. Today I start my 7 day Liquid diet.  Had to buy some SlimFast Low Carb drinks.  I bought both the chocolate and vanilla. : ( but I keep reminding myself, It's for a good cause : )   8 days until surgery.

01-17-2007 Drank 3 Slim Fast Shakes today, these shakes are not the greatest, I think you just have to get used to them because by the afternoon it wasn't that bad : ) I had sugar free jello for dessert.  7 more days til' surgery. Went to pick up my son at my mom's house after work. She was making Menudo, mmmmm, but did not have any......just went home telling myself "Just remember how good it will be after the surgery" : ) Mom is showing her concern by what she tells me but I know she means well.  I keep reassuring her everything will be ok and smile : ) I have to understand that it must be hard for her also. Tonight I had an awful dream : ( hope everything goes well.

01-18-2007 Well what I did today might not have been a good idea.  I read the Memorials of WLS.  I had read some before and I was fine but for some reason today I did not feel good about it and I even got a major headache.  I think that because it is so close to my surgery date, I am starting to worry a little : ( 6 more days til' surgery.

01-19-2007 Nothing much today.  I am so ready for the 24th, 5 more days til' surgery.  Today I read successful WLS profiles.  Feel much better : ) Hope everyone has a great and safe weekend.

01-22-2007 Weight = 251 1/4 Well this weekend surely went by very fast : )  Saturday I talked to a friend at HEB that gave me more information regarding the surgery and what to expect after the surgery.  I have read profiles in this site but, I did not know what my surgeon normally has as his protocol after surgery.  Surgery is the day after tomorrow, I can't wait.  I think I am starting to get dizzy with worries and with this LIQUID DIET that I am on : ) have lost a total of 14 1/2 lbs for this month Jan.

01-23-2007 Went to Surgeon's Office for Pre-op and Dietician consult.  Registered at the hospital, Weight 249 lbs. Attended the monthly seminar at 7:00pm.  Went shopping for last minute items.  Home by 11:30pm.

01-24-2007 Today Is my surgery DATE.  I dropped off my son at school and since they had told me that I had to arrive at the hospital at 10:00am I went in about 8:00am and that was a good thing since I had some time to relax in my room.  I had told my mom, son, and daughter not to worry that I would see them in the afternoon after the surgery.  I get real nervous when I know someone is waiting for me : )  Thank GOD everything went well. I was taken to the holding area at about 10:30am, to the surgery room at about 11:45am, and I woke up at the Recovery Room at about 3:30pm.  I kept looking for the clock to remember the times : ) I was in my room at about 4:15pm.  I did not feel any pain and I asked the nurse when I would be able to get up, I had read that you should walk the same day of surgery.  I was told that PT would walk me later in the afternoon.  Well, that did not happen : ( even though I was so ready to get out of bed.  The night nurse assistance told me that I would not be able to walk until the morning. My mother stayed with me during that night and even though I thought I would be ok if she went home, I really appreciate that she was there.  I rested most of the time and in the morning I just wanted to get out of bed, take a shower and go home.  In there morning a Medical Student came to see how I was doing and minutes later the Dr's nurse came in and said I could walk, shower, and go home. I walked with PT one time, took a shower, and went home that day.

One very important note:  I did not have any pain after surgery and the only two times I did accept pain medication  were before my walk and before I went home only because I did not want to have any pain (just in case).  I did get my pain medication Rx. but have not used it.  I did have a pain pump called "ON-Q" that you carry with you for about 4-5 days after your surgery and then you just remove the two tiny tubes that are left above your incision and you feel no pain when they are removed.  It seems that this pump is left there and it is constantly releasing pain medication without you having to do anything to it but carry it with you wherever you go.  THANK GOD FOR THIS PAIN PUMP : )

01-25-2007 I stayed at my parent's house when I got released from the hospital on Friday until Monday.  The frist 2 nights were tough because I did not have a recliner and I could not sleep in the bed without waking up with a cough that felt that I was shoking and I could not catch my breath.  My daughter and son were there with me and their comforts made me feel much better.  I finally call a Rent-A-Center and rented a reclincer.

02-08-2007 Today was my 2 week post-op appointment with my surgeon and dietician.  I weighted 237 lbs that is 12 lbs lost since surgery.

02-21-2007 Yesterday I attended the monthly WLS seminar at VBMC.  I feel well but the only two concerns are: I can not drink as much as I know that I have to drink and I believe that is what is causing me to have the second problem which is I have not had a bowel movement in about 2 weeks : (  I drank some mineral oil last night, this morning and if I don't have any results I will take some more tonight.  I feel so blah because of that : (

02-22-2007 Went to surgeon's office Weighed 233lbs that's      16 lbs lost since surgery. I informed the nurse (CNA) that I was still constipated and that the Mineral Oil did not do anything for me yet and she advised that I take some Milk of Magnesium (MOM).  I will try it and see what happens.  I need something to happen soon : (  For those of you who are reading this, a stool softener earlier would help. Tonight I took some Milk of Magnesium for my constipation, hopefully it will work : (

02-23-2007  This is such a headache, I am so uncomfortable : (

I am super constipated and during lunch my co-workers bought me fish and a baked potato for lunch and a sugar free pie.  I enjoyed the meal but if only I could feel relief from my BM.

4:00pm : ) what a relief, finally I was relieved : ) I spoke to the dietician and she indicated that I needed to increase my vegetable intake (carrots, potatoes, green beans, peas, and mushrooms) and my fruit intake (peaches, pears, and bananas).

03-08-2007 This morning I went to my 6 weeks appointment with my surgeon and my weight is 222 lbs. a total lost of 27 lbs. in 6 weeks : ) with no complications up to now, eating soft foods, pain-free, and doing well Thank God.  Hope everyone is doing fine.

03-13-2007  Early this morning I had digestive problems : ( all I can say is Drink LOTS, LOTS, and LOTS of fluid.  I was up until 2:00am until finally I got some relief...had to use an enema : (

03-14-2007  Called my Surgeon's office and left a voicemail for the Dietician regarding my problem and decided to put myself on a 2-3 day fluid diet until I feel better.

03-15-2007 Got a call back from the Dietician and she also encouraged LOTS of fluids.  I told her I was worried about having affected the surgery (such as causing a leak to my pouch) but she indicated that is not possible.  I am still in fluids and have no problems with it since I can't and don't feel like eating.

03-16-2007 Went to weigh in and today I weighed 221 lbs.  That is a total of 1 lb loss from the 8th of this month (8 days ago).  Well 1 lbs is better than none at all right?? : ) Next appt. 5-01-07

03-22-2007 Not much new has happened...I have started walking for 1 hour from my house to the track field and back to my house with my son.  I am still fighting the head hunger and trying to decide what is good for me to eat and what is not......I guess that is why I hardly eat anything.  My cloth is feeling better, more loose : ) but this is hard......I don't know what I would have done without my daughter and my son both at my side and the help and support they have both been to me, I LOVE THEM BOTH DEARLY : x

03-26-2007 Today's weight = 213 lbs : ) lost another 8 lbs.

03-27-2007 Made an appointment with my Surgeon, Dr. Hilmy due to a severe pain in the right abdomen and right shoulder and Constipation problems.  I was referred to a Gastroenterologist and my Appt. is this Friday, 03/30/07.

03-30-2007 Went to the appointment with the Gastroenterologist and he will be doing a Colonoscopy on Monday morning. I will prep tonight Friday and Saturday with Magnesium Citrate and Sunday I will take some Golytly (sp?).  Will keep you posted. Pray for me.  God Bless you all.

04-02-2007 Had my Colonoscopy done today at HMC at 8:30am.  I woke up in the Recovery room and was taken to my room where I was given liquids.  I kept falling asleep and couldn't seem to wake up.  Went home at 11:40am.  My best friend picked me up because I could not drive.  I slept all day until that night.  I had been on liquids since Friday and I still was not hungry.

04-03-2007  Oh my God did I wake up hungry today : ) and my stomach was making a lot of rumbling sounds, could have been the air in my stomach or the hunger pain but I am feeling so much better.  The pain is almost gone and I feel clean inside.

Went to my surgeon's office because I needed to buy more vitamins and calcium, the last ones I took were on Thursday and with the runaround that I did on Friday I did not make it on time to go buy them at the office. I still weigh 213 lbs.

04-07-2007 & 04-08-2007 Drank some Magnesium Citrate on Friday 1/2 bottle and Saturday 1/4 bottle and mixed the rest with 1/2 glass of water and drank about half. Had results on Saturday : )

04-10-2007 Woke up with a sharp pain on my Epigastric area.  Could hardly turn, had to turn my whole body.  It diminished as the day passed by.

04-12-2007 Weighed in at 207 lbs.

04-16-2007 Went for my 3 mo lab work. Weighted in at 205 lbs.

Next week the 24th will be my 3 month post-op and I want to go weight in.  Hopefully I will be below the 200 lb mark : )

04-24-2007 Today is my 3 month post-op.  Weighed in at 202 lbs. Lost 3 lbs and did not meet my goal of 199lbs :- ( Attended the monthly Support Group meeting in the afternoon and it was a very interesting meeting.  We got to hear everyone's success story and that helped me with my spirits and to better understand that others are also going through what I have been experiencing.

04-30-2007 Went to my GI appt. Seems everything is normal in the lower part of my GI tract, no complications.

05-01-2007 Went to my 3 mo post-op with Dr. Hilmy and the Dietician.  Weight = 197 : ) finally out of the 200 lb mark : ) I did have my lab work low though and was given Rx for Vit. A, Vit.  D, and Ferrous Sulfate (Iron) : ( I am already taken Multivitamins and Calcium and I hate taking pills : ( well I want my lab work to be normal so I have to take them.  I have lab work again in 2 wks and see the surgeon in a month.  I also spoke with the Dietician and she was very informative as far as what I can and can not eat.

05-02-2007 Today was my first day with the Trainer at the Dr.'s office.  Everything was good.

Went to San Antonio, Tx for the weekend (9/28/07 - 9/30/07), via bus, and met a guy that was a wonderful person both kind and loving (Juan Palomo).  Friday went to eat at Taco Cabana and then dancing til 5am. Saturday went to eat at China Buffet, shopping and to a Concert for 2 Great Latin Groups, both my favorite, Conjunto Tropicana and Pesado.  Sunday went to eat at Lubys and back to the bus terminal to return home. I will always cherish all the fun I had this weekend.  This surgery has helped me tremendously and I was able to enjoy myself and the company I was with.
After I added this message, the following is an email sent to me and it put a smile in my face and made me realize that what it says is so TRUE and I had to include it here, enjoy:

People come into your life for a reason, a season or a lifetime.
When you know which one it is, you will know what to do  for that person.
When someone is in your life for a REASON,  it is usually to meet a needyou have expressed.
They have  come to assist you through a difficulty, to provide you with guidance and support,
to aid you physically, emotionally  or spiritually. They may seem like agodsend and they are.
They are there for the reason you need them to be.
Then, without any wrongdoing on your part or at an  inconvenient time,
this person will say or do something to  bring the relationship to an end.
Sometimes they die.  Sometimes they walk away.
Sometimes they act up and force  you to take a stand.
What we must realize is that our need  has been met, our desire fulfilled, their work is done.
The prayer you sent up has been answered and now it is  time to move on.

Some  people come into your life for a SEASON, because your turn has come to share, grow or learn.
They bring you an experience  of peace or make you laugh.
They may teach you something  you have never done.
They usually give you an unbelievable  amount of joy.
Believe it, it is real. But only for a  season.

LIFETIME  relationships teach you lifetime lessons,
things you must  build upon in order to have a solid emotional foundation.
Your job is to accept the lesson,
love the person and  put what you have learned to use in all otherrelationships  and areas of your life.
It is said that love is blind but  friendship is clairvoyant.

Thank  you for being a part of my life,
whether you were a  reason, a season or a lifetime.

Today I made an appointment with my surgeon.  I did not see my surgeon the beginning of this year like I was supposed to but it is now scheduled for Dec. 22, 2008.
