My story is probably like many people that have had weight loss surgery or are considering weight loss surgery, I always had to watch my weight but it didn't become a real problem until about 5 years ago. Since that time, I have hovered between 90 and 120 pounds over-weight. I became more concerned three years ago when I had a heart attack at 52. Instead of being sobered by the event and getting serious about managing my weight, I actually gained 30 pounds. I almost had a fatalistic attitude about the whole thing which is not my normal outlook. I am very much an internalist - meaning I think I have a lot of control over how my life plays out.
Anyway, I had surgery on January 25 and so far, things have been going fairly well. I was off pain pills in 36 hours and felt pretty good until eight days after surgery. I ended up with an impacted bowel which caused a lot of straining and twisting before I gave up and went to the emergency room. Unfortunately, the twisting and straining caused two of my laparoscopic incisions to break open. I am going to a wound specialist three times a week to get them packed so they will heal properly. With any luck it will be resolved in a couple more weeks. I consider these minor complications and other than a bleak moment on day 3, I am very happy I had the surgery.
