I've read many of your "stories" and now I'll share mine. Unlike many others, I really haven't always had a big weight problem. Of course, I thought I was a blimp as a teenager when I was all of a size 10. When I got married in 1986 I was a size 12 or 14. By the time the marriage ended four years later, I was a size 16. Quite frankly, that was ok with me - I looked pretty good at a 16. I stayed that way, occasionally losing 10 or 20 pounds, then regaining it and a little more for many years.
When I was 39, I decided to go to college for the first time and I stayed in pretty good shape. The real trouble started when I decided to go to law school in 2001 at the age of 45. My weight steadily went up until I was a size 22 and 245 pounds. During law school, I developed high blood pressure and high cholesterol and was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. Since then, I've gone from being diet-controlled to taking 2 medications for the diabetes and it is only moderately well controlled. I'm up to 3 bp meds and 40 mg a day of Lipitor.
My co-morbidities, more than my weight, have led me to seek the WLS solution. I had my psych appt on 5/8, saw my surgeon on 5/16, met with the nutritionist on 5/20 and the cardiologist on 6/16. BCBS has approved me and my surgery is scheduled for 8/18. I was really disappointed that I couldn't have it in July (as I'd first been told to expect), but I'm sure there's a good reason and I can wait, although not patiently!
Reading others' profiles and blogs has helped me in knowing that I've made the right decision and I hope that my posts will help others too.
