My surgery

Sep 23, 2008

The doctors in the bariatric network of my insurance company primarily perform rouen-y or lapband.  I don't want either surgery.  If I'm going to have the surgery then I am going to have the surgery that I want.  If it comes down to either having a surgery that I don't want or not having surgery at all, then I won't have surgery.

Bariatric surgery is a major procedure and there's no sense doing it if you are not 100% comfortable w/ the procedure and 100% committed to the post op work.  The only surgery that I am 100% comfortable w/ is the vertical sleeve.  It's vertical sleeve or bust!

Fighting On

I've decided to prepare for the worse case scenario which is my medical insurance not changing in 2009.  I'm in the process of trying to schedule a seminar with the MD in Knoxville.  I still think it's ridiculous that I have to travel 3 hours from home for this when there are over a dozen surgeons in Nashville who perform the surgery.  However, I've decided that having the surgery is important enough to me for me to go through the inconvenience.

Lazy Hospital

I called Baptist Hospital today, who came highly recommended from a friend. I told them that I need to fax them a form so that they can be approved by my insurance. The secretary told me that the surgeons do insurance paperwork once a year.  Said they won't complete insurance credentialing paperwork for just one patient. So much for superior patient care! I'm not important enough for them to complete paperwork!

How I came to the surgery decision

Aug 02, 2008

I first considered surgery in 2004.  I went to an information seminar, but was unimpressed by the lap-band & the rouen y.  The lap-band seemed like a big pain in the tushie. I didn't like the idea of always going to the md's office to get it adjusted all the time.  The rouen y is too radical for me.  I don't like the idea of going thru the rest of my life being malnurished and being able to only consume  600 calories a day.
I wanted a surgery that was more radical than the lap band but less radical than rouen y.  I've been watching weight loss surgery shows for the past 2 years including Brookhaven Obesity Clinic & Big Medicine.  I have also been watching plastic surgery shows because I know that once I get the extra weight off, I will need plastic surgery due to the amount of weight I need to lose.
I recently saw an epidsode of Big Medicine where a woman lost 115 lbs in 11 months with the lap band. I was shocked that someone could lose that much weight so quickly with the surgery, so I decided to look into surgery again.  Then I discovered the sleeve procedure which seemed like the perfect surgery for me.  The sleeve is restrictive without being as mal-absorbing & it is more radical than lap-band & and a little less radical than rouen y.  Sleeve for me!!
