Journey Continues

Dec 21, 2011

Lets see.......I waited over a year for my DS after jumping through all of the insurance hoops.  My surgery was August 17th, 2011.

Five weeks before my surgery, I misstepped and broke my foot.  Thank the good Lord, my surgeon said as long as I was able to stand and walk, I could continue with my surgery.  I wore a boot until the day of surgery.
Three weeks before my surgery, my daughter's husband walked out on her and their 2 1/2 y/o daughter, for another woman, after being together for 13 yrs.  They had been together all through high school and college.  Needless to say, they and our whole family fell into devastation.
Two weeks before surgery, my oldest brother died from complications of Lupus.
These last two events have been life changing for our whole family, including my parents and my other 3 brothers and our families.

My surgery went well, ran a fever while in the hospital, so had to stay 6 days.  After coming out of the hospital, a reddened wound turned into a full infection.  I was doing well with pain, fluids, and nutrition though, not having any difficulty.  I was even taking my prescription meds as well as some of my vitamins.  Within two weeks of surgery, I ended in the ER for IV antibiotics and wound care.  The surgeon placed me on a high dose of Keflex.  The Keflex made me very sick to my stomach.  Was unable to get my nutrition or fluids in due to the nausea.  2 weeks after the Keflex, ended up back in the ER dehydrated and got IV Fluids and a banana bag.

All of this time we are trying to help my daughter keep it together for her and my granddaughter, as well as keep it together ourselves.  Afterall, this is two major losses we have experienced in a month.

The day after Thanksgiving, we move my daughter to another town per us and pickups in the cold pouring down rain.  It took us 4 days in these conditions.  Through everything that had been going on, I was not diligent with my fluids, protein, or vites and ended up again on the following Friday nite receiving IV fluids and another banana bag.  The next day I had a horrible sore throat and developed a horrible cold.

Two days later, my Dad ended up in the hospital and we almost lost him.  I spent the next 5 days and 4 nites in the hospital with him.  He is 88 and my Mom is 83,  she needed to go home at night.  Sick, not much sleep, I just wasn't able to get well. Went home to get some rest once my Dad was stableized and placed in the rehab unit.  Was home for 2 days and 1 night when I had to make the trip back to Carmel to see my surgeon.

On our way to see the surgeon, got a call from home stating they had to take my Mom to the ER due to her heart rate dropping rapidly and very low.  We had to turn around and head to the hospital.  Spent the next 2 days and night with my Mom in the hospital where they placed and external pacemaker on her.  Was with her when she flatlined and had to jolt her back.  They placed a pacemaker in her that day.

I have been home all week trying to get well.  Have been keeping my fluids up, still struggling with my protein and vites due to the continued nausea I have continued to have since I was on the Keflex.  Have had a CT scan and an Endoscopy done with nothing found.

I will continue to work at it, have to, it's for survival.  I had seen others post about having trouble with getting their fluids, protein, and vites in and just knew that would never be me, I was so diligent before surgery.  One never expects these other factors to come into play.
I don't know if it's nerves or something else causing my nausea, I'm just really tired of it.

If I had to do this surgery over again, would I?  You bet I would.  Even through everything that has happened and the continued nausea, I have never had one second of regret.  I know that in time, this too, shall pass.
