I'm 35 now, I was 30 when I had my Laprascopic turned into Open RNY on March 16,2004. For me turning the big 30 was all about change; in my lifestyle, my health, my mental outlook, my career, etc.
I was sick and tired of struggling with weight gain and at my higest weight of 269 was scared to death of slowly creeping up to 300 and crossing the line into super moribd obesity. I was already sturggling with some comorbidies such as asthma, arthritis and sleep apnea.
I was very lucky that my insurancee changed in 2004 to include coverage for gastric bypass and that my pcp and psychiatrist were so supportive of my surgery. I was approved in late February if I recall correctly and given my surgery date of 3/16/04. My lap RNY turned into an open RNY due to some diffuclties in reaching into my tummy so I have the scars for both. I recovered quite well within two weeks only to be hit with a virus in the third week that delayed my return to work for another two weeks. That virus was the start of my down spiralling descent into health hell but that's another story completely and is completely unrelated to any complications to suregery, (ie I had no complications).
I eventually lost about 125 lbs (269 down to 144) only to recently regain about 12lbs at my current weight of 156.Along the way I also had a 25lb regain during 2006-2007 dueto the Deopo-Provera birth control shot. Ladies, stay away from this if you can, it is not your friend.
Currently I am looking into plastic surgery options both abroad in Central America with a US trained/accredited surgeon Dr Roman Zaldivar-Molina and locally with Dr Broc Pratt of Metrolina Plastic Surgery (drpratt.com). Dr Zaldivar would be operating in hospital with a stay of up to 5 days for a abdominoplasty, lipo, thigh lift, and mons lift for around $12500. Dr Pratt could possibly do it as outpatient, I have not been for a consult yet so don't know the fees involved. I will be a self pay patient as I currently have Medicare and it doesn't cover reconstructive surgery as far as I know.
