Surgery and After

Aug 21, 2014

I had my gastric sleeve surgery Monday August 11th. I was at the hospital at noon for a 2pm surgery. When  checked in I was told it was pushed back to 2:40 PM. Well I went into pre-op at 1 PM. While in pre-op I found out it would be later. I finally went to the operating room at 4 PM. I was told I came out at 5PM. I had a ruff time in recovery do to my sleep apnea. All I remember is seeing bright lights and wanting to rest. As I started to rest I heard my wife telling me to breath. I then would breath and wake up just a little. Then it was back to the lights, and her telling me to breath again. This seemed to go on several times. The next thing I remember was being wheeled to my room and seeing my wife at the door. That night I had a lot of nausea. My nurses kept me comfortable though. The next day I asked my wife about her telling me to breathe. She said that shortly after coming out to recovery, my blood pressure went up over 200. She said I wasn't breathing that much, and that the machine showed me not taking any breathes over a minute time period several times. When I would not breathe an alarm would go off and she would squeeze my hand and tell me to breathe at which point I would. She did say a couple times she had to shake me. I had to have 5 shots of some type of drug to bring my blood pressure down below 140. Once I was down then my breathing got better. I spent two nights in the hospital. Once out I went home. I have felt really good. I have mainly been eating Greek yogurt, jello, and protein drinks. I have more energy now than I have had for years. Last Friday I walked over a mile. this Monday and today, I walked over two miles. I really do feel great. I only have one issue and that is the area under my small incision is a little sore. I seen my surgeon yesterday and he told me it is normal and not to worry about it. When I left the hospital last Wednesday I weighed 460 lbs. yesterday when I was at the doctor I weighed 435 lbs. so 25 lbs in one week, I'll take that. I know some of its water, but I know the walking is helping. The only thing I don't like right now is not being able to drink water or liquid fast. Other than that this has been a blessing. Onward and upward (not in weight though).

Pre-Op class

Jul 30, 2014

Today I attended a Pre-Op class with about 12 other people who will be having their surgery over the next few weeks. I have been in this process for a few years. I could never reach goal weight. Well I have done it and am actually 40 lbs under. I have surgery on August 11th in Sacramento. I am in the Kaiser program there. I also met with my surgeon today. He went over the basics and said he would see me on the day of surgery. I am excited to start a new phase of my life. My weight today was 466. When I started this I was 582. 11 more days to surgery.
