I don't know what to do...

Sep 13, 2011

I had lapband surgery six years ago under special circumstances. (My dad had a slot on this celebrity style surgery where three US surgeons took patients on a jet to Mexico to stay in a resort and have surgery. However he had previously had bypass surgery and was not really eligible. He had already paid, so he asked me if I wanted to take his place. I had just been diagnosed with PCOS ((with borderline test results but more so by symtoms like not being able to lose weight)) and my endo said that the lapband might help. So shorter then two weeks later I was on a plane not even really knowing what I was having done and never had any testing done.) I probably was not a good candidate. I have had problems with the band since the beginning. I was on liquids for 4 months. I have never been able to tolerate fluid in the band and even now completely empty (have been going on 4 years) there is no rhythm or reason why some days I can eat and some days a spoonful of soup has me clogged. And let me just mention that I was religious about following the rules! Four years ago a local bariatric doctor had me do a barium swallow and said I had a slow esophageal swallow. So maybe it is not strong enough to push things through the band. Ok sorry for the long story but I wanted to give you a little back ground. I want my band removed! I was recently diagnosed with hashimoto’s. Gotta love all these wonderful auto immune diseases that keep me gaining weight and keep me from being able to lose weight. So I am thinking about having the band removed and having gastric bypass or the sleeve. Some say with having the thyroid disorder that the mal absorption would probably be more successful. I still have the stipulation that nothing might work to help me lose weight since I have PCOS & Hashimotos. Very depressing! I am scared to death to make the wrong choice but I can not figure out the right one. I just know that the quality of life I have experienced with the problems from the band has SUCKED! I have dealt with it for far too long. I thought it was me and that I was the only one. Then luckily I found a few site and read my same story. However most people had the band removed with in the first couple of years. I have dealt with it for six years. A lot of the stories I have read from the people experiencing the same thing had a much better quality of life once the band was removed and they had the bypass or the sleeve. Does anyone have any insight for me? I am thinking of using Dr. Rodriguez either having a band removal to bypass or band removal to sleeve. I just feel so lost!
