Surgery
Jan 29, 2009
Surgery was December 11, 2008, so it's been about a month and a half since the big day. It all went very well. I didn't have any pain at all after being released from the hospital. The liquid to puree diet seemed sooo long, but it's all right. My first fill is Monday, and I am READY for it. I still don't eat as much as I used to, but I can eat too much without any problems, so I'm ready to get this band tightened.
I've lost about 25 pounds. I still don't exercise like I should. I try to be more active, but winter hit hard, Just when I should get up an move to get warm I find myself hybernating under a blanket by the heater. My goal is to change that behavior starting today. I just have to get my mind wrapped around the idea that this is something I have to do for me no matter what the weather is like outside.
I must say I feel so much better. My back and ankle do not hurt all the time now. My blood sugar appears to have a new normal at around 85 without medication - that's from my home testing not the doctors. Before the surgery if my blood sugar actually got down to 85 with medication I felt like I was going to pass out. Now it feels GREAT! I'm so happy with that. I have heard that lap band surgery usually doesn't change that right away, so this is a special surprise to me.
All in all I am very happy that I ended up having the band instead of the bypass. I may not lose the weight as fast, but it has still been a blessing without the extra worries.
FINALLY A DATE!

It's been a long wait or so it seemed. My primary Dr. finally finished his letter to insurance. I had to wait almost 2 months for that. So December 11th is the day and December 1st no more solid food. Oh wow! That will be a big change, but I am very excited about the whole thing.
I elected to have a filter put in as a precaution for DVH. Having a blood clot was always my biggest fear, so this alleviates most of the emotions attached to that for me.
Thankful....

I had my first consult with Dr. Gornichec today. He said I was potentially a good candidate for either surgery, but we need to do one more heart test before we can proceed. We need to make sure I don't have plaque build-up or blockages. My CRP levels are high, and of course there's the cholesterol problem. I have a B1 deficiency we're working to correct, and I have sleep apnea. Other than that the rest of the tests looked normal. I told him about the deal with my hubby and he likes the idea. He told me to wait two years before I thought about making any changes if I continue with that decision.
I am really thankful for this process, because I probably would have never know I have the vitamin deficiency or sleep apnea if not for all these preliminary tests. After reaching and then passing 300 pounds I became pretty paranoid about my health. I feel more sure about what is really going on now, and most of all for the first time in a long time I feel HOPE. Really hope is what I need most right now.
