Exercise Fail.

Feb 09, 2009

Ok, so today I went to the exercise physiologist.  That was quite possibly the most uncomfortable half hour of my life.  This guy is like an amateur body builder, and I'm well.. fat. :p   OK quick background on my day so far.  I worked 13 hours last night, so I'm a bit tired.. My son is sick, so he had to stay home from school, and I had made him an appointment for 8am, this appointment with the guy was at 9am.  So I show up and I'm tired, my son is looking like death, and this guy is not looking very impressed.  So I tell him why I'm there, my doctor referred me so I can have an exercise routine established prior to surgery that will help me be the healthiest I can be.  What I expected: him and I to go over my daily routine and week, and then he would help me find time that I could begin to do some small exercises, then gradually build up, etc.  Then (since there is an actual gym in the building that has his office in it), we could go over and he could demonstrate some of these things I could do.  I believe that this sounds fair and what an 'exercise physiologist' should do.  What actually happened:  I came in and he looked at me and my son as if we were a disappointment and a waste of his time.  He asked me how much I exercise now, and I answered honestly (I mean, why lie at this point), which is rarely to never.  He was like 'well what can you do'?  At this point, I know this isn't going to be a warm experience, so I'm ready to go.  But, I forge on, telling him I could try to add more walking to my routine.  He said I should work out in the hospital's gym on my lunch break.  Ok one, there is no 'break' for me to leave my patients when I'm at work, and 2 our hospital doesn't have an on-site gym for us to go and work out when ever we feel like it.  I told him all this and he looked at me like I am a liar.  Well to make this long story short, I took a couple of papers from him that would help me determine my target heart rate, and some stuff that would show me how to use a resistance band (which he let me take home on a loaner program), and that was that.  I was out of there.  I will try to walk more, I will try to increase my strength before surgery, but I am just highly disappointed with this 'professional' and his attempt to help me at all.   One last thing, before I left, I told him I was glad I didn't have to pay out of pocket to come see him (insurance picked up that bill, since its medically required for me to have the surgery referral).  lol  He didn't like that comment, but I'm glad I let him know how I feel about this experience.

Exercise.

Feb 08, 2009

Well, in the morning, I'm meeting with an exercise physiologist to talk about things I can do to help prepare my body for surgery.  I'm not really sure what to think about it, what to expect, and I'm kind of nervous.  I feel like this person will judge me and try to convince me to just eat right and exercise, as if this thought hasn't occurred to me before.  My doctor has recommend I see this fella as part of all the things I have to do before she gives me a referral to the surgeon.  I've done everything else on her list, including reading a book called 'Belly Fat to Belly Flat,' seeing a nutritionist, taking a pre-op/information class on the different types of surgery, and keeping a dietary log.  I also met with a therapist, which wasn't a big deal At All.  I was very nervous about that, I really wasn't sure what to expect.  But he was very nice, and he commended me on my choice to have the surgery, to help better my health.  Anyway, tomorrow morning, exercise, sigh.
