Getting through the liquid diet

Apr 04, 2009

Well I started the Medifast shakes/liquid diet on Monday 3/30 and I will tell you that the shakes are actually pretty tasty, much better than slimfast or any other diet shake drinks I have ever had before.  I am just getting bored with drinking them already.  I am drinking 5 shakes per day which is unbelievable to me that this is all I can put in my stomach for the next two weeks.  I have cheated today and I am ashamed of myself but I needed something "solid".  You don't really feel hungry with the shakes but the tempation to eat is all around you.  My family life has to go on, so when the rest of the family is eating spaghetti and meatballs with garlic bread, I'm sure you can imagine the torture of smelling this wonderful food throughout the house while i'm sipping away on one of my shakes.  It is very hard.  SOmetimes I get mad.  Sometimes I go for a walk around the block and tell my husband to light a candle or something so the whole house doesn't smell so darn GOOD.  Afterall, I need to realize that is nobody's fault but my own that I have allowed myself to gain so much weight over the years.  No one said this was going to be easy.  Although I did have a veggie sandwich today, I am going to be back on track with my shakes.  I am trying not to weigh myself every day.  I do know I have lost a few pounds already but not sure exactly how many.  I eat shakes at 9am, 12noon, 3pm, 6pm and 9pm each day.  I don't really drink anything else although I know I should be drinking lots of water also.  I have coffee in the morning with fat free half & half and equal.  Dr. said this was ok.
I could not imagine what kind of mood I would be in each day if I couldn't have my coffee!! Good grief!

FINALLY APPROVED and I CAN'T BELIEVE IT!!

Mar 14, 2009

I haven't been on here in quite awhile as things have not gone too smoothly for me but I have learned from a couple others in the support groups here in NJ for those who have had or are planning on having Gastric Bypass that some insurances do not approve right away.  Let me fill you in....

I had a "tentative" surgery date of 7/02/08 as first paperwork was submitted and the doctor's office was nice enough to pencil in a date for me to speed things along...  to make a long story short, my insurance denied the surgery that time and two more times for a total of three times.  I have continued to pursue it though with the help of my doctor's office and the insurance decision was finally reversed in my favor.  I won't go in specifics of what agencies were involved here to have the insurance company reverse after three denials as all that matters now is I AM APPROVED!!!

It has been very stressful for me during this phase of denials... you get your hope up and then it's a severe letdown each time.. such a rollercoaster ride.  I have been an emotional wreck at times.

I am now scheduled for April 13th for surgery and I am nervous and excited at the same time.  I am going to start my liquid diet in about a week.  I only have to do it for two weeks prior to my surgery date but I want to make sure I lose the 10-15 lbs necessary for a successful laporascopic surgery.  I am told, this helps "shrink your liver" for the procedure as they need to move it out of the way during surgery.

I am now looking to make some new friends on here who are scheduled for surgery around the same date as me so we can help each other through this time and  offer each other advice and encouragement during each step of the way.  I had added a few friends back when I though I was going in and I am so amazed at these women now and how beautiful they look.  They have all done exceptionally well, overcoming any obstacles that have come along.

That's it for now. Hope this isn't such a boring read.  I wanted others to know that it is not always a simple thing with the insurance but for all the stress it has caused me, I'm positive the end result will be worth it!!  Talk to you soon!

Tentative Surgery Date

Apr 16, 2008

I met with Dr. Sadek on 4/15/08 and we discussed my decision to have the Gastric Bypass instead of the Lap Band, which I was initially going with. He answered all my questions and I felt very comfortable talking to him. lthough I do not have insurance approval yet, the Dr. was nice enough to "pencil me in" to his surgery schedule for July 2nd.  I am really anxious!!!!

How it all started

Apr 02, 2008

I have been thinking about weight-loss surgery for awhile, then I saw a commercial for Lap Band and went to a seminar on Nov 14th to learn more about this.

Seminar was good, got me excited.  I thought to myself, this could be a reality.

I am finally done with all the Dr. visits, Primary physician approval, Psych Evaluation, Cardiologist clearance, Pulmonologist clearance, Sleep Study done..  Had an endoscopy yesterday and have finally decided on the Gastric Bypass.

I am 5' 7" and weight 275 lbs.  I have Diabetes type II, Hypertension, Hypothyroid and had a TIA seven years ago.  I have made the decision to have surgery because I would like a better quality of life, without diabetic complications and risk of further heart problems.  I have not been successful with any diets i have tried in the past.  I joined a gym last year for 3 months and lost some inches, but overall gained 5 pounds.  A lot of activity bothers my knees, hips and ankles.  I have a lot of hip pain at night when trying to sleep.  I don't have sleep apnea, however I have difficulty getting a good nights rest as I snore really bad.  I wake up my husband and myself sometimes too.

I am very excited to have my surgery and look forward to getting a surgery date!!
