Well, I'm back on track for a new life. Alot have happened in my life since deciding not to have the surgery in 2005. I often regret not having the surgery beause I'm 5 years closer to death because of my deteriorating health. My wife and I have a meeting next week Thursday with a Surgeon to discuss our journey. Yes this time my wife will also have the surgery. We  are now living in New York. I need to learn how to update my info.

My first posting. Friday was my 40th birthday and I am still fat. I peeked out at 445lb. about eight years ago, but have lost 90lb since then. I'm at 350 now and can't seem to loose anymore. So my wife and I have decided to have the band surgery. Wed have not talk with a doctor yet but have plans to call Dr. Fries office tomorrow to see if we can meet with him. I was approved 3 years ago to have the surgery but backed out at the last minute. The surgon at that time told me that if I was able to loose the wait I lost I did not need the surgery. Her I am three years later still fat and with more medical problems. It is time. I have a new baby girl that is 14 months old and a ten year old that needs me. When I was 29 my doctoer at the time told me if I did not loose the wait I would be dead by the time I am 40. I got five years to go. It is time to loose the wait. I know he is not god, but he has a pretty good idea about the situation. Till next time. I will up date as !
time progress.

Keep in touch.

Recived paperwork from one of the doctors that I requested information from. I reviewed the packet and notice that the cost of the RNY surgery was around $15,000. Is this a little cheap? I don't want a bargin surgery and get what I pay for.If you know what I mean.
Wife and I stoped smoking on Sunday. We woke up and said no more. We both smoked the black and mild cigar. We would go through a hundred packs a month. They come in a 20 packs carton at $40 to $45 a carton which is 5 cartons, a savings of $200.00 a month, not to mention our health. My wife was having the most problems and became very emontional and very short tempered because we did not get our patch until today. Now that we have the patch, everything is fine. So far we have not had any cravins. Lfe is great. Until next time folks.Bye.

Well my wife was really wanting to have the surgery with me, but our doctor said she need to put some more effort in dieting first because she is pretty healthy at this time and would have a lot of problems with the insurance company.
She only had problems when she was pregnant with our children, size 8 before the kids now, well I love her unconditionally, however if she want the surgery I will help her fight for it. So she looking into the Adkins diet that the doctor suggested for now
My doctor-PCP started my paper work today for my sugery, he actualy put the information about surgery in his notes. We have lived in 8 states in 9 years so we had to research all my doctors to come up with their address so we can send for medical records.
The research was easy because we used the internet. We had to remember the doctor’s name or the name of the clinics and hospitals that I have been as a patient at or of.

My doctor suggests that I go on the Adkins diet until the surgery, so I will.
He said the reason we did not have fat cavemen is because they did not have carbohydrates in their diets, and if it worked for them it will work for me. I said O-KAYYY!
My blood sugars where a little high today-195 do to a couple of small moon pies last night. I love moon pies dam-it!

Have not smoked in almost 30 days. Do not need another cigar.
If it's meant to be, it will be.

Untill next time, bye bye

Letter to the insurance company that my surgeon requested me to write.

Subject: Request for Weight Lost Surgery

CC: Dr. Jakens, PCP

To whom it may concern.

I began my weight gain in the forth grade while living in Oklahoma City. With seven brothers and sisters and a mother and father at home. My mother, oldest brother and myself were over weight. At that time it was not a problem because people would say I was a healthy boy, which led me to believe that my weight was ok. As I got older, the healthy boy became a fat boy in the same people’s eyes, but did nothing to educate me on the need to stop the weight gain. Remember these are people that loved me. I was teased in school but ignored the teasing and just thought they were just mean people. Beside, it was what I was trained to do.

Although I was a fat person growing up, I always been in the eyes of people, I was a fat kid in the boy scouts that did well in the scouts and was encourage to complete my eagle scout status but I knew my limitations. I also was a professional musician while in college and was a very liked person. I was never just sitting around the house eating, drowning in self-pity. I would eat on the road, big parties with a lot of food. Besides, it was what I was trained to do.

In college I was tag with the name “The Over Weight Lover Heavy D”. The weight did not hinder my relationship (s) with the ladies. So, what I’m saying for so long I was programmed that Fat was in but I hated it and hid my low self-esteem to the point I felt I did not have a problem. As I got order and wiser, I became concern with my health but still had the mixed massages on how to attack the problem. The journey of weight loss started to no avail. I then decide that the fat is my problem and I need to fix it. I guess you are thinking; that’s noble of me? Nevertheless, I tried and am still trying but I need help. I know that every wrong thing that I put into my mouth sticks with me, and now I pretty much maintain my weight. I know if I have the surgery I will loose and not regain the weight. I currently work with disadvantage youth, helping then prepare for the work world by teaching them social and employability skills and been doing this for 16 years but cant help myself save my one life.

I started my weight control diets early on, and been on some type of diet off and on for 23 years. At age 17 I was 315 pounds, tried weight watchers, diet tea, slim fast, cabbage diet and Jenny Craig for a month, to expensive for me.

After being hospitalized in 1990 and weighing in at 445 lbs., during this time my Doctor told me if I did not loose the weight I will be died by age 45. I began to get really concern with my weight.

I had problems with high blood sugars and did not know it for a bout 6 months, I knew something was wrong so I went to the doctor. I changed my eating habits and went on a diet. My weight went up and down after going on and off diets. In 1997 while living in Junction City Kansas I was prescribed Redux and took it for 8 months until it was banded. Lost about 20 pounds. At that time I developed heel spears and walked with a cane had problem with the heel spears for about three years before they healed up.

I have lower back pain, ongoing problem sitting or standing; the pain bothers me most when standing and or walking for extended time. I join a fitness club, (Baileys Total Fitness) while living in Cincinnati OH. Lost weight, about 10 pounds in about 2 months but the pain in my legs and back was too much for me. I became stiff and could hardly walk on my foot after the exercising. I exercise off and on for about 8 months until I move to Junction City Kansas.

In 2001 while living in Detroit MI. I was hospitalized for chest tightness and slight pain while at work, doctors found no problems with heart after test, but did find low water and a minor chemical problem that I can’t remember what it was. Admitted to hospital for observation for over exertion and heat-related problems in ICU for three days.

Released from hospital to follow up with my PCP. Stress test and sleep test ordered by Doctor at hospital. Stress test went well until the last test in which the treadmill accelerates and raised. Heart rate accelerated and the Doctor stopped the machine.

I was unable to take the sleep test because I could not get a schedule before I had to move out of state. I have not had a sleep study to see if I have sleep apnea as of yet. The doctor at the hospital believed I do because of the activity on the heart monitor I was hooked up to while in the ICU. I weighted about 390lbs. I start walking and cutting back on the amount of food I would eat and was loosing weight.

The following year I became interested in the WLS and talked with a surgeon about the procedure. The Doctor requested that I loose 50 pounds and start walking and stop smoking and then follow up with her in about three to four months. Well, I joined the Medical weight loose clinic, lost 35 pounds, stop smoking and brought a treadmill and figured I was cured of being fat and had it all figured out. My job relocated for the sixth time in five years so I stop the Medical Weight lost program because where I moved did not have a program. I continued to loose weight slowly and my doctor at the time said it was great that I was loosing and to put the idea of weight lose surgery on the back burner for now. I peeked out around 350 lbs.

I moved three more times from Detroit MI. to New York to Gainesville FL to New Mexico and gained 10 pounds. I’m down to around 355lbs now. I still struggling and need the WLS.

I currently struggling with controlling my diabetes and currently is on the Atkins diet on my PCP’s request so I can manage my blood glucose better. I started the diet on 4-4-04, sense then my blood sugars have leveled at and averaged of 108 morning and evenings. I wish I had tried the low carbohydrate diet earlier on, I’ve also lost 2 ½ pounds.

Have arthritis in left hand and knee, high blood pressure and high cholesterol levels. Started new medication and diet change to control. Smoked cigars for 5 years, non-smoker for the last 2 months. Since stopping I sleep better, have more energy than before but still need more energy to function day to day. I have constant pain in feet, ankles, legs and hips. Use a lot of over the counter drugs for pain. Have high tolerance for pain or just gotten use to it. I have ongoing problems with boils that get infected in the folds of my fat. Take antacids daily for heartburn. I can drink water and get heartburn. Acid reflux occurs not as much now because I change my eating habits. Produced a hernia over the last 18 months above my navel. Only have pain when lifting, so I limit the lifting. I must sleep with my head low to the mattress because when elevated I wake up out of my sleep choking. I also wake up choking when I sleep in my recliner.

I’m really not a big eater now but love breads and sweets. I have eliminated the carbohydrates to a small number daily and feel the results. I have a lovely wife that supports me and a 10-year-old son and 15 month old daughter that I love very much and I need to be around to see them both grow up. Please help me help myself and approve the surgery.

PS. I only have 5 more years of life left, help me please.

Sincerely
HD

Been on the diet for 6 days and fill great. Lost only two and a halve pounds. My doctor said he is mostly concern with my blood sugars at this time. He said if I get my blood under control, I would lose weight. It was hard at first. My blood glucose levels have been averaging 103 all week. I eat some grapes today about 12:00pm. Check my blood glucose levels around 3:15pm, blood level went up to 156. At 5:00pm my glucose levels were at 115 back to normal. My own insulin is working now, so the diet has helped my blood levels. I have modified my diet a little but stay away from the starches, carobs and sugars. I wish I had been educated about the carobs early on. I could have had control of my blood levels much sooner.

Paper work from prevouois doctor is beginning to come into my PCP office. PCP gave me his letter to send to my surgeon, very limited in the decryption of my health and was not clear on what he was doing with the letter. The letter did not say he was referral me to have the surgery. I going to send it to the surgeon with a note attached so he can call my PCP to get what he needs so I don’t have to insult my PCP. Doctor is very supportive of my wanting to have the surgery. Today my weight is 355lbs. Lost 2pound on my new diet.

bye for now.

Luckily you do not pay state taxes in Florida.

4-21-04

Had my surgery consultation today. The surgeon feels real confident that I will be approved for my surgery by my insurance company. He does two types of surgeries, Lap RNY and the Lap Band. He stated that he fill that I would do well with either surgery but he selected the Lap RNY because the amount of weight I want and need to loose. September 13, 2004 is the date and possibly sooner, depending on the pre-op screening and test completion and cancellations. Dr. Freeze was very direct, did not hold any punches and told it like it was. I respect the fact that he was up-front and also personal. His staff was very professional and appeared to be very caring. So far, I’m rating Dr. Frezza and his staff a 10 on a scale 1-10. I also talked with some of his patients and they speak very highly of him. So far I’m glad I selected him.

Keep me in your prayers

6-29-04
Well, I had my stress test last week. On Monday, June 27th my doctor called and told me that she wanted me to meet with the Cardiologist to discuss my stress test because there is a problem with the results of my test. I met with the doctor on Tuesday, June 28th. The doctor ask a bunch of questions about me having any symptoms such as, pain in the chest and shortness of breath when walking. I told him no. He checked my pulse in my groin area, on my feet, my wrist and around my neck and did not find any problems. He stated that it appears that I may have a blockage, or fatty tissue is altering the test. He also stated that my hart is strong. During the Stress test the doctor told me that my vitals was great and steady. To rule out any problems he wants to do a Cardiac Catheterization. He said if the Catheterization come back clear, he would give me clearance to have my surgery. The test is next Friday, July 9th. Please wish me luck!

7-10-04

Well, I developed a pain in my side on 7-1-04. The pain became severe and unbearable. I went to the ER on Wed. 7-7-04 and after an ultra sound done on my chest and lower abdominal area, it was discovered that I have Pancreatitis, an inflamed pancreas. So, my Heart Catheterization that was scheduled for Friday, July 9th has been postponed.

While in the ER some blood was drawn for testing. The testing showed some of the chemicals that my pancreas produce (amylase serum) where elevated but this is normal for an inflamed pancreas, further blood work and test by my PCP will determine if there is further problems with my pancreas.

The ER doctor explains what might have caused the pancreas to become inflamed.

On Thursday morning I saw my PCP, he explained what causes this problem which is, alcohol, fats in the blood and high levels of sugar just to name a few. He also said my medicine could be the problem because I don’t drink much, my last drink was in May and I only had one. So I have stopped all my medicines, drinking a lot of water and eating soup. If everything is all right the pancreas will began to get better on it's own.

Today is Saturday and my side fills a whole lot better but I still fill some discomfort. I will get the results from the blood work on Monday to see if the pancreas is working correctly. By the way the ER doctor prescribed me vicondin for pain. My PCP took me off of them and said the vicondin will only make the problem worst. I did notice after the pain medicine have worn off I was in a lot of pain, more pain than I was in before the ER. He stopped all pain medicine so I will know that my pancreas is getting better. If the pain get strong call him or go to the ER.

I know the lord only put on you what you can handle and if it's ment to be it will be.

Well, I’m back from DC and the trip was great. The drive my wife and I both hated. It got so bad in the Virginia, North Carolina and the Tennessee Mountains we almost stop and got an airplane back to New Mexico. We took highway 70 out of Saint Louis to Columbus OH on to Pennsylvania on to DC. The mountains got to us. We are from Oklahoma, the flat Plan State. So while in DC a friend told me to take highway 95 out of DC and go to Atlanta to highway 20 and then go west to New Mexico so I could miss the mountains, a littlel longer rout but nice. Nooo I am hard headed. We took 85 to highway 40 into the Appalachian Mountains then into North Carolina, Tennessee into the Smoky Mountains then back into the Appalachians again. As long as I live I will never make that drive again. I have driven HW 20 and 95 before but never 40 and 85 that fare east. I’ve also been down 75 through the Smokies from New York going to Florida, but the HW is a little better than my past experience. I'm not set up for it. If I try and take the wife again, I think we will be in divorce court.

I have blood work on Monday, August 9th for my heart Catheterization test on Friday the 13th; Dam I did not realize the 13th was on Friday. Good thing I remembered I believe in the almighty God, because I was going to change my date again. God will take care of me just like he did in those mountains.

Until next time, piece.

The insurance company informed my doctor’s office that I was approved for the surgery December 1, 2004. Now get this. I received a second denial letter December 27, 2004. The insurance company said a clerical error was the reason I received the wrong letter.

I’m not made because if it meant to be it will be.

I know my BAF family prayed for me and I would like to say thanks and God bless you all.

Please don’t stop praying!

His mom and I was in tears because when he started at Valley View elementary he was struggling hard to keep up in class. We knew he was working hard as he grades improved because he made the honor roll the second 9 weeks of school and the secound semester, but to hear him read a speech in front of everyone that talk about how he was struggling when he started school at Valley View, how his family moved around the country and how he was going to miss his friends at Valley View really touched our hearts. 6-14-05 Now get this, my wife called my doctor on Tuesday, June 14, 2005 to ask if he could fill my prescriptions on my blood sugar meds. His nurse told my wife I needed to go in a pay on a $100.00 bill I have before the doctor refills my prescriptions and he wanted to see him before he writes the prescriptions and he could not see me for two days. Well I fired that doctor and found a new one because I feel my health should be worth more that a hundred dollars. It is the principal of it all.

6-17-05 Been struggling with my blood sugar levels for three days. So I went to see my new doctor. He checked my blood sugar levels and sent me straight to the emergency room. Went to the emergency room Blood sugar was up to 430 a hour later it was 517. Stayed there while I received medicines to reduce the blood sugar levels. Went it at 3:00pm got out at 11:30pm.
My new doctor was so upset with my old doctor he called him and gave him a review of their professional etiquette. My old doctor said he was not aware of my problem. His wife is the office manager and head Nurse and she made the decision to give me the massage my wife gave me. I been receiving phone calls from my old doctors office every since. I don’t answer them because if I do they want like my response. My old doctor have made a lot of money off of my bad health over the past year I been seeing him, about and average of $175 to $200.00 a visit just for him to write a prescription, just think of what the cost would be if I was sick.

See ya

Have an appointment to see him on next Friday. Well I found that if I don’t eat anything all day my blood sugars would drop to 150. You know a brotha is tearing heads off at that time.

6-24-05 Well I saw my doctor. My blood sugar was averaging just below 250. I checked it in the morning and before bed. He changed my meds and I will monitor my levels for the next week. Wisdom

It took me a year to get approved. Denied two times before I was approved. My surgery is Monday, July 25th if all goes well at my pre-admission appointments today. Yes, I gave up until my surgeon’s office called me and told me they appealed my surgery denial one more time for me. I became motivated again and was approved in about a week. So what I’m saying is, if it’s meant to be it will be. 16 months was long but it seams like I started the journey yesterday. Time flies so check out your options and determine what is best for you. I talk with three surgeons over a period of three years before I started my process 16 months ago with my current surgeon. I seen some get approved in a week’s time and have seen some take longer than it took me to get approved. Just like the surgery we all have our own plan and process, similar but different. Goal and objectives are the same.

Keep working with it.

God has a plan for you

God wants to make sure that we have our surgeries at the right time. Guess what. My surgery was postponed again.

7-15-05

Received a call from Surgeons office. Requesting that I report to his office on 7-22-05 for pre-surgery test and admission.

Bye Bye

7-22- Well, I went to my pre-surgery testing and found that my Pulmonary Clearance was not submitted to my surgeon’s office. I know I took a Pulmonary Function Tests but the doctor did not send in a pulmonary clearance to my surgeon’s office. My PCP assumed that both the test and the clearance where in the same but their not. The surgeon’s nurse over looked the fact that I did not have a clearance form in my files and schedule me to go in and complete pre-admission testing and evaluations, which my time was not wasted. So, I must have another pulmonary function tests again so the doctor can review my most current tests for clearance.

The surgeon’s nurse was so apologetic for not catching the error before I drove 312 hours one-way for pre-admission testing. On a positive note I just want everyone to know I’m not a bit upset at the nurse or my PCP because this is God plan for me.

I completed all of my pre-registration paper work, blood work, chest x-rays, Anesthesiologist evaluation and ultrasound on my legs, so next week when I complete the Pulmonary function tests and receive my Pulmonary clearance in my hand I will fax it to my surgeon to receive my new surgery date for the following week. When I report to the hospital I will report to the prep area for surgery.

God is good always

What if my surgery was not canceled and I did not have my pulmonary clearance that the surgeon requires me to have and everyone overlooked it?
Just a thought.

I had my pulmonary clearance (P-test) meeting with the pulmonary doctor this morning. He checked my lungs and listened to my hart, checked my pulse and throat. He stated I looked fine but wants me to get my tonsils out when I’m able to do so after my surgery because it will help my breathing long term. He also wanted me to get on a c-pap machine because of my sleep study results. My surgeons Nurse told me that my surgery would help it also. My wife and I left the hospital about 6:30pm after finishing all of my test and paperwork. We got a room to get some rest and drove back to Roswell at 1:30am arriving home at 4:30am. I will update when I find out my results from the P-test.

He said my PCP that ordered the test should have put me on the machine after he received the results from my test, so I’m scheduled to meet with him on Monday. By the way my pulmonary doctor faxed my pulmonary clearance to my surgeon’s office today.

Well my wife called me and told me the hospital called her at home and said that I needed to report to the hospital at 5:30am Monday, August 1st, before I could call them back. I get very nervous until I get on the BAF sight then I’m able to calm down. I know that the lords is in my corner and so is my BAF family. Keep praying for my family and I so we can get through this process.

Thanks for all of your support

I did not have the surgery. I got cold feet while in the holding room. A nurse came to me and said she forgot to get me to sign some papers. I looked at the document; the document outlines what may happen during surgery or after. Out of 50 items three of the items was death. I became very nervous my blood pressure went up. The doctor came over to me and asks what was wrong with me; I simply told him I’m not ready for surgery. He walked over to my IV and released a bag that he tied into my IV. I later found out that it was calming medicine. He smiled and said It’s ok you don’t have to have the surgery now. He went and got another doctor he came over and said it’s ok if you want to get up it’s ok. The surgeon came over and was very upset with my decision. I was already nervous waiting on the sleeping gas then this nurse came over and put this paper in my face.

I will up date soon.
