Over a year out

Dec 13, 2007

Sorry it has taken so long to repost.  Life is just flying by at the moment.  Overall just incredibly blessed.  I haven't lost that much more but just sculpted a bit more and living more.  Some stupid things but overall thrilled.  I've gone from a 4x shirt to a large.  From 48 pants to 35 inch waist now.  I have a bicep for the first time as I am lifting a lot more.  Nice to have boobs smaller than my wife's and a bicep bigger!!!  Wouldn't trade this surgery for the world.

Blessings,

7 Months Today

Jun 13, 2007

Hi all, today is my 7 month surgiversary.  I can't begin to tell you how glad I am that I have had this surgery.  If you are reading this and thinking about the surgery, I would do it again in a heartbeat.  So many blessings as a result.  Here are some that come to mind just recently.

1) Last week was in a cab with two other coworkers.  I actually asked to sit in the middle because I could.
2) My skinny jeans (4 inches smaller than the first pair I bought in March) actually fall off.
3) Here we are in the summer, where simply walking outside a year ago would make me sweat.  Well today, I have to really work at it sweat even when it is 90 outside.
4) When I was in the best shape of the last 10 years I would walk 2.5 miles over our hills as my heavy workout.  I would almost die by the end of it.  I went out today and did the same walk for the first time in 2 years.  No problem at all.  In fact I had energy to spare.
5) My knees would pop going down the hills...don't anymore.
6) I have a metabolism again.  Previous to surgery I could look at some foods and gain weight.  Now even when I cheat a little (not a lot), I can still burn it off.
7) Energy to play with my kids....and my wife

These are just some of the things that come to mind.  Overall I'm down almost 118 lbs.  Bottom line, the RNY surgery gave me hope when I didn't have hope left.  I turn 42 at the end of this month.  I actually now feel better than I did at 22.  What is that worth?  A ton.

6 Months

May 16, 2007

Just a brief update at 6 months.  Today I am down a total of 107.2lbs, but this surgery has given me so much more than just the lost weight.  Here are some vitals.

Today I was able to officially go off all meds I was on previous to surgery.

Diabetes - gone in 5 weeks (after 8 years on meds)(3 meds, all gone in 5 weeks)
High Cholesterol meds - gone in 8 weeks after 15 years on meds.
Sleep Apnea - Gone in 5 months after 10 years on machine
Blood Pressure - Dropped first med within 3 weeks, scaled down and last complete in 6 months.

* I don't sweat like I used to, even in heavy exercise or nervous situations.
* Previously, I had numerous digestive issues related to dairy, meats, etc.  Those are gone
* I have energy to do things that I never thought about doing.
* Much better love life with the wife ;-)
* Playing basketball and soccer with my son.
* Much improved hygene.  This might be gross but had several problems with hemorrhoids that simply went away after surgery.
* Traveling is so much easier as I no longer need my CPAP and have plenty of room to spare in the airplane seat.
* I don't sweat and get disgusting on plane trips with leather seats.

Anyway, there are many many more.  I would do this again in a heartbeat.  For any of you lurking around the profiles reading this, the surgery was the best decision I ever made regarding my health.

Thanks

Greg

3/18/2007 - 18 weeks postop

Mar 17, 2007

Hi everyone, the last 4 weeks have been quite the struggle.  After losing consistenlty even on the steroids (which often cause people to gain weight), the last 4 weeks have seen a total of only 3.8lbs loss.  This has been quite the test to me to not just give up.  I've been focusing heavily on making sure my caloric intake is in the 600-800 calories range, working out 5-6 days a week, but the scale is not moving much.  I wish I had taken my measurements at the beginning to see if I am indeed losing inches. On the bright side I have cut my last pre-op med in half (BP medicine) and hopefully I will be off that soon.  That could be one of the reasons I have felt so tired and weak.  Down a total of 90.4lbs.

Hi All, plugging along.  Too much cheating on my part this past two weeks.  What I've realized is that I do not have a strong dumping syndrome like many with an RNY.  I guess this is good and bad.  I don't have that extra tool to help with the behavior modification.  I'm still struggling with not eating when stressed.  Work has been very busy and stressful  the last two weeks and I find myself snacking more and senselessly.  That has to change.

Several real positives though.  The first is I am on my 5th day outside of the restrictive boot on my foot.  Although I am still on prednisone, the dosage is lowering and I am able to do more things.  I actually am now starting to feel like I have lost 87 lbs.

The second thing is that this morning  I was able to put on the first pair of jeans in 18 years!  Let me give you a little history.  I put on most of my initial weight while going to grad school.  I went from about 223 to 308 in a year.  In that process, the jeans (and all my clothes for that matter) got tight and then too small.  In the process, I moved from Columbus, OH to Atlanta - and then again to South Florida.  Although I could have bought larger size jeans, it was simply too hot and/or too uncomfortable to do so.

This early morning (3:30am) I was shopping at Wal-Mart and came across some relaxed fit Levi's that were 6 inches less in waist from where I was three months ago.  Not only did they fit, my butt can't fill out the seat of the jeans!!!!  It's a wierd feeling to say the least.  My wife of nearly 10 years has never seen me wear a pair of jeans.  I'm curious to her reaction.

Total of 87lbs lost so far.

2/4/2007 - Almost 12 Weeks Postop

Feb 03, 2007

Still progressing, albeit not at the pace I wanted to be at right now.  I found out the source of the foot problems had nothing to do with surgery or arthritis, but rather two torn tendons in my foot.  One that goes along the outside from ankle to mid foot, and another that goes from the outside of the ankle across to the inside of the foot.  So I am in a boot for the next 4-6 weeks.  When I'm on steroids everything is great, no swelling, no water retention.  As soon as I go off them though, swelling comes back.  Hopefully not another surgery.

Had my appointment with my primary care doctor who was ecstatic at the progress.  I'm now off 4 of the 5 meds I was on before the surgery.  Cholesterol down to 162, and Trigylcerides dropped from 437 to 187.

Here is the progress.  Down 78lbs total since this morning.

1/22/2006 - 10 weeks post-op

Jan 22, 2007

Hi all, just spent a week in NYC for our annual major trade show.  It was a blur and filled with incredible blessings.  I usually gain 5-10lbs at this show and this time, I lost 3lbs.  Several pics from the show added to the left.

The feet issues continue to be a problem.  I had a cortisone shot two days before leaving for New York.  That lasted until about the time we went to Ground Zero.  From then on it was incredibly painful.  I had an MRI on Saturday and get the results on Wednesday.  All of this to say I have not been able to workout the way I want to, which is having an effect on the speed of the weight loss.  Overall, I am thankful to have lost weight the last two weeks, just wish I could get past the feet issues.  Pain was so bad at times I had to get the Celebrex going again and that helped me retain some water.  With that being said, it's been a blessed two weeks.  Here is the progress - Nearly 70lbs down.

January 8, 2007 - 8 Weeks Post Op

Jan 07, 2007

The weight loss has slowed down a bit, mostly because of my cheating over the holidays but also I realized due to some of the meds I was on.  Had my 6 week checkup on the 28th and the surgeon took me off all my diabetes meds.  So of the 5 meds  I was on before surgery, 3 are gone and hopefully the Lipitor will be gone after my PCP visit here in two weeks.  I couldn't be happier about that.

I am still struggling with foot and ankle pain - this is due mainly because of what I am doing while sleeping.  I seem to be hyperextending my ankles when sleeping.  I started Celebrex after my surgeon visit and that helped the pain, but my weightloss stopped completely.  Come to find out that Celebrex causes weight gain and fluid retention.  So I went off of that, and the weight loss began again.  Down 63.4 lbs total.
