diabetes and insulin and testing...my history and NOW

Aug 28, 2008

In 1994 I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. I have been insulin dependant for about 10 years. As of April 2008 I was taking Levemir 40 Units 2X a day AND Novolog 8 units plus a sliding scale 3X a day. This frequently totalled more than 120 units a day. I had frequent low sugar events which came on suddenly and severely. I would have to treat the low with food which was very frustrating. Additionally, I have a thyroid defiency as well. Very significant currently taking Synthroid 2.25 mg.
Since beginning my pre op weightloss journey (medifast) and subsequently surgery, I have been able to decrease my insulin to ( currently) Levemir 8 units 2X a day
Novolog --never more than 24 units a day total
I now also take Actos 15mg and metformin 500mg.
I have lost 71+ pounds...my doc says I have about 175 more to lose. I have every reason to believe that I can continue to drop my insulin dosages... and maybe even eleminate it entirely!!!!!!! I test my blood 4X a day. I have not had a single low blood sugar event since surgery.

Wow! One month ago today I had my sleeve surgery. I am so glad I did it. I paid cash for it by borrowing against my retirement. It has been a great tool. I have felt better mentally and physically then I ever have about myself, my life and my future. The months will surely roll by whether we do anything right or not. I am finally and permanently getting things right with my weight and my overall health. It feels so good.

Went to support group last night. How fun to hear everyone share. I am not much of a public talker so I didn't share. But I do learn a lot by listening to others. I hope everyone can feel encouraged. I got some good product ideas also. I weighed myself last night on the official scale and have dropped another 2 pounds. My total is now 71+ pounds lost forever. Do you ever wonder where it goes???Ha Ha Ha! I have had a pretty stressful week and have felt great every day...how many people can say that?!!

Not much to report. Still on soft proteins. Tastes good. I eat fat free refried beans, low fat string cheese, and tuna with a little fat free mayo---not much of any of it. Drinking a lot of water.Minimum of 64 ounces every day. Still having to test blood sugar 4X a day. Still on two kinds of insulin also Actos 15 mg. Starting on metformin in the next 2 days. Trying to get my blood sugars down. Frustrating. But I know I am progressing. I FEEL GREAT!

2week post op appointment with my surgeon yesterday...I dropped 19 pounds in 2 weeks since surgery!!!!!!! I am feeling great and about to adventure into the Land of Soft Protein Foods. I am a little nervous but I think I will try Low Fat American cheese first. I had to get new clothes... no more 5X and 6X . I am wearing a 3X now... It feels like I am dreaming. I hear a lot of folks say they want to get back  to a certain weight or size when they were thin. I have never been thin so this is a fabulous new adventure for me.

Haven't blogged for a bit because I have been so busy redecorating my house! My body is getting a makeover and my house is also. I am feeling really good. Several days ago I felt a little weak and dizzy . My sister suggested I get some Slim-fast Low Carb Diet and try a little. I sipped almost an ounce and felt better. It has been 106 degrees outside and I have been really careful to have my 64---96ounces of water every day. I love the Fuze slenderize drinks also. Four more days until my 2 week post op diet class.

Yesterday and today were very good days. Felt good all day and had plenty of energy. I tried some decaf coffee today...no problem. I still have not had to take anything for pain. Not even tylenol. I know it sound like science fiction. But it is true. I do think it is wise for folks to plan on a few days of pampering after surgery. I have certainly noticed how much everyday life is food-centered. Not just on TV, but also conversation. For example, when someone describes home decor they might say a pie wedge table, a lemon colored sofa, a candy striped lamp, etc., Weird. Also, I thought I smelled food flavors this morning. Impossible because I stripped my fridge and pantry and haven't cooked anything in my kitchen in weeks. Sense memory I suppose.

July 29 part II

Well, the rest of the day was a HUGE turn around. Great Day! I drove, I watered the trees at home, I cleaned out a closet, and rode my stationary bike for 15 minutes. Riding actually felt good. WooHoo!!!

At 4 am I had the worst nausea/dizziness I have ever had in my life. Eventually, I did vomit a tiny amount . Then I used Phenergan cream on my wrists and got almost instant relief. I have to admit I was pretty scared to throw up...let's be blunt I didn't know what was coming up or how much. But I am fine now. It was just a bump in the road. And I have some terrific news...I was able to keep my CPAP on for over 7 hours last night.
YeeHaw! We all know I have a love/hate relationship with my CPAP. But it is necessary for now. So I keep trying to make peace with it. A friend of mine asked what it is and I said it is like trying to sleep in full snorkeling gear while feeling like you are being force fed air  while drowning. I know it is helping me though so I am thankful to have it .

3 days post-op

Jul 28, 2008

I am home now and feeling so much better than I thought I would be. The most pain I have is where they had to put in a central line for my IV. I have 6 little incisions --none longer than 2 inches. My sister wanted me to weigh before I left the hospital but the nurses really discouraged me . They said because of the IV fluids most people actually gain up to 13 pounds right after surgery. That's okay because I FEEL SO GOOOOD!
