I am a 43 year old male, 6"1" tall and managed to get my weight up to 290lbs in 2004. Suddenly in the second half of 2004 I dropped 70lbs by eating everything I should not and a few months later I was diagnosed with Type II Diabetes.
With a high stress IT Director job and a crazy family life, I tried to manage my blood sugars as good as I could, but some of the medications was preventing weight loss and I was consistent at 250lbs for the next 5 years.
My blood sugars remained out of control and at the beginning of 2010 I started insulin which pushed my weight into the 290's. In October 2011 I started getting toe infections from ingrown toenails and they were not healing and very painful. Ultimately I went to see a podiatrist and they helped to resolve.
That is where I decided - this is enough. Did some research and decided on a surgeon - the best in DFW, Dr. Nick Nicholson. I went to see Dr. Nick on November 4, 2011 for the first time and since I had six documented nutritionist visits over the past 24 months, I did not have to fulfill the 6 month dietician requirement and I had my surgery on December 28, 2011.
So far, so good. Still early days, but my bloodsugars are running great and less than 3 weeks out I have already lost more than 40 lbs (including pre-op diet).
My wife had RNY in 1998 and lost 155lbs in 11 months and she still looks great 2 babies later. She is my inspiration, but it has also been very helpful to see her experiences over the past 12 years that we have been married.
