I'm 31 years old and the decision to have WLS really was a difficult one but one that I couldn't turn away from. My mother died in 2003 from diabetes related complications to open heart surgery. She was only 53 and she was my best friend. About a year later, my Blood sugar began to fluctuate sporadically and I had already been taking medications for high blood pressure. Luckily my mother and I shared a family doc. who set me on the right track. We tried diet, exercise and some different medications, but just couldn't seem to get it under control. In the fall of 2005 I was diagnosed with arthritis in both knees. It was time to take some more drastic action. The doc. recommended WLS. I began my journey in November 2005 with a trip to the surgeon for a consultation and a 6 month diet/exercise plan with my PCP. On March 28, 2006 I was approved for surgery. My surgery was done on July 7, 2006 and I don't regret a thing. I felt great from the beginning. Within 2 weeks I was off all medications except for my vitamins. It was a life saver.
