On Monday, August 11, 2008 I was first on the surgery list for lap-band surgery. I was home by 1 pm. The first 2 days involved a clock-watching for 4 hour time periods for pain meds as it basically felt like a 5 headed cyclops had crawled out of my belly button. Not everyone has pain, but I did based on 4 previous major abdominal surgeries and loads of adhesions (scar tissue). On Wednesday I awoke feeling great and down 5 pounds. I promptly overdid it and Thursday was not as wonderful so I backed off a little. I've been great since Friday with one exception which I will get to later. This morning I was down 10 pounds!
One of my big concerns was about my glucophage pills. Bandsters are not allowed to swallow pills and my druggist had told me I did not want to crush the glucophage pill as it is really nasty to swallow and smell. The first night after surgery, my blood sugar was normal so I thought, "Let's just use the long acting insulin". Tuesday morning my sugar was still normal. 6 days post-op and I am no longer taking glucophage, have decreaed my insulin by 20 units, and have normal sugars! Yeah!
The earlier event I mentioned happened Saturday night. I made a high protein shake and a few moments after consuming it I had lots of pain in my left side and back right side. I took pain med and went to bed, I awakened several times in the night with pain in my left side. No pain today but still feel "bruised" by the ordeal. I think I may have overeaten...hmm...that sure is a deterrent...LOL! I had my gallbladder out in January as a preliminary to this surgery so it wasn't that.
I return to work tomorrow and am very excited to see how I do. My hubby helped me carry all my food, blender, water, etc. to work yesterday so I am well prepared. I can't wait to get back to square dancing and having some energy. Watch out world, here I come
