Well I made it to the other side!! I had my surgery on Friday May 3rd and I got home today. I feel pretty good. They sent home Tylenol w/ Codiene elixir for pain and I have only had to take it once today. I did take it last night at bedtime so I could sleep better, however, my nurse 'Sarah" had other ideas! She had to make sure all my vitals were taken at precisely 12:00 and 4:00, then in between times she'd come in to check my JP drain, check my urine output, give my Toradol. I couldn't believe it, the night before discharge I thought I'd be able to sleep, but she felt the need to really earn her wages!! By 5:30 I had been awakened for the upteenth time and I just got up and took a shower. What the hay!! I know she needed to do a few things but I was stable enough that she could have grouped a few things together! Good care, by the way!!!
I spent Friday night in ICU, my sats dropped down into the 80's when I'd fall asleep and they finally put O2 on me at 4 liters. They think it was my 'undiagnosed' sleep apnea and I probably run in the 80's when asleep all the time. However, I ended up running a temp all day Saturday and Dr. M thinks it was atelectasis which can be caused from not breathing deep enough or from not breathing often enough. It really helped me understand the absolute necessity of having a good respiratory status before surgery. I was lucky. I have 6 'stab' wounds and a JP drain. I feel pretty good, a bit tired and even occasionally confused. I had some trouble with urinary retention which was from the morphine, but what a great drug!! I passed my swallow test today and have to return on Monday to have the drain and staples removed. The dietician came to visit today and I got alot of good info from her. I was worried that I wouldn't know what to eat once I was home but she was very thorough and left me her number and email so I was very impressed. The care I had was very good. I saw alot of old familiar faces, being in the business of nursing for nearly 20 years. I also met some nursing staff that are planning RNY's later this year. It was a very good experience and now I just have to get 550-600 calories everyday into my pouch! My DH, Mitch, has been absolutley a dream. He's been so worried and checks on everything I do. It's cute. It was a good thing he listened to the discharge instructions, however, because he has a better memory and helped me remember a few things I'd forgotten. I'm rambling now. There is so much to share! More later :-)
