Arriving at one goal is a starting point to another!   This is my new motto!
I have been over weight all of my life. In middle school, I would spend my lunch hours in the Home EC department, eating with other people who were over weight, getting support and suggestions from the teacher. In high school, I wanted to loose weight, so I would eat one yogurt all day long. I got down to a size 14. By the time I got married at 22, I wore a size 20 wedding dress. My weight just kept going up. I joined Weight Watchers and lost 45 pounds! We were going on a trip with some friends to Hawaii! I ended up going 5 months pregnant! It was a great last no kids vacation. I had morning, afternoon and evening sickness most of my pregnancy, so actually came out of pregnancy lighter than when I got pregnant. Then, 4 months later, I was pregnant again! From there I was in and out of Weight Watchers, walking, and just trying to make better choices. The only time my husband and I really fight is over money or my weight. He has told me that about 10 years ago, he just stopped talking about my weight.
The top number that I ever saw on the scale was 325 pounds. I know that it was higher, but I would not step on the scale. I stayed around 310 for 9 years. I carry a lot of my weight in my hips, butt and thighs. When we would walk into a place, I would look to see how big the chairs were. I travel for my job, and use to get stressed about seeing if I was going to need to ask for a seat belt extender or not. I can’t put the armrest down on both sides. Someone suggested that I just take an extender so it wasn’t so stressful. This goes against my personality, but I carry it in the front pocket of my roller bag. I am looking forward to the day that I leave it on a plane when I get off, because I don’t need it any longer.
I had been hearing radio ads for Lapband, and thought it sounded less invasive. It was when my son was home for Christmas, that I asked him what he thought. His first response was, “What does Dad think?” He found it very strange, that I had not talked to my husband yet about it. My husband is my best friend, and normally I would, but this was a very big decision which is a sore point in our relationship. So, the first week in January, I went to see my GP Doctor. We talked about it. I was very close to being diabetic, and have a long family history of diabetes. I then found out that there was a informational meeting going on the next week. I told my husband about it, and we both attended. His biggest concern was that I was doing this for myself and not for him. It took 5 months to getting all of the appointments completed and insurance to give the OK. I have a fabulous group of friends and family who have been very supportive along the way, and will continue to be so. I have blogged my journey. The link is   http://startingpointforanothergoal.blogspot.com/. So that is it in a nut shell. I had Roux-en Y Gastric Bypass on 6/22/09. It was the best thing that I have ever done for MYSELF. I am a giver, often forgetting to give to myself
