Home Sweet Home

May 22, 2010

Surgery was Wed. morning.  Everything went well, although the surgeon found a hiatal hernia and repaired that. (Many of us  overweight people have these).  I had a GREAT deal of pain Wed. afternoon in the left shoulder area, from the gas that is pumped in for the surgery and referred pain from the hernia.  I had a PCA pump with dilaudid (patient administered) but does not let you have more than you should.  Around 7:45 Wed. evening,  I guess that I overdosed on the dilaudid and stopped breathing, still had a pulse but not breathing.  My husband and family were called and then to add to the drama, I am very difficult to intubate due to a weird structural abnormality somewhere between my mouth and vocal cords.

Anyway, when I came to I had what felt like a plumber's pipe stuck down my throat, I was restrained so I wouldn't pull the tube out and I was in intensive care.  The tube was taken out around 10 on Thurs. am and I could talk again-yeah.  I had to stay in the unit overnight, then was transferred Friday am to a regular room and came home Friday around 4pm.

I guess just one of those flukey 'possible side effects' of surgery, blah, blah...  I've have many surgeries and nothing like this ever happened, but bodies change as does our tolerance to certain substances.

So now I'm home, doing well, resting, sleeping, sipping, walking around the house, using the incentive spirometer, etc.  We're moving on...eyes on the prize.

Count Down!

May 13, 2010

One week from tonight, I will be about 36 hours post op!  Very excited and also very curious to find out how I will feel.  Time will tell.  I've tried the Unjury chocolate with fat free milk and it's good.  I'm having the laparoscopic gastric by-pass-doc says that I will feel like I've been run over by a truck for the first 3 days.  Then, who can tell me how it goes after that?
