9 Year Anniversary Today!!

Jan 19, 2010

I just checked my email and was shocked to see a message from Obesity Help congratulating me on 9 years post op. I totally forgot about my surgery day 9 years ago but here I am, 9 years later, still maintaining my weight.

If you go back and read my profile from 2001 to 2004, you will see I had always struggled with my weight. I had surgery and was one of those people who lost the weight slowly and surely and after 1 year I was only down 100 pounds. While that was great I was always disappointed I was not one of those people the weight just fell off of-- but alas, I was not-- I was slow and sure. Eventually my body, without any exercise or work, decided to maintain at about 155 (I'm 5'7" and that is about a size 8 for me). I never wanted to be a stick so being a size 8 and 10 is fine by me. I had surgery early enough in my life that I did not have much excess skin and my body bounced back well.

I am now 9 years post op and am still around 155. I fluctuate between 150 and 160 but am fine anywhere in there. I still wear 8's and 10's and have really maintained my weight very steadily-- just like I lost it-- steady. I see people all over the place that lost very fast and have now gained the weight back. That was not me. Gastric Bypass was an amazing gift for me and it has become a tool I use to maintain. Don't think it is not work- it is! I will notice I have gained because I have been eating too much or eating high calorie foods and then I have to kick myself in the butt and get back down. It seems to work for me and I feel very lucky that I have not had the fluctuations that others have had.

I will post pictures of me currently and you will see me- an average woman. I don't really remember being fat. I remember the feelings of not fitting into a chair or not being able to cross my legs, but I don't remember what I looked like. No one around me can believe I was ever heavy-- not at all. They regularly pay me the highest complement ever- YOU LOOK LIKE YOU HAVE ALWAYS BEEN THIN!-- I love hearing that! I am nothing special but WLS worked for me. It has worked for 9 years now and I feel blessed to be a totally healthy person in a healthy body!
