The Journey Begins

Aug 30, 2010

My real journey began when I was in my teens.  Like most people in this boat it's been a up hill battle.  I have given thought to WLS several differnet times in my life, but also thought that I can do it on my own.  Each time that I did make it on my own I would gain back the loss plus more pounds.  Then the first part of July I stepped on the scale and there it was the number that would make me finally take on surgery no matter the cost.

The scale said 280, OMG just twnety pounds from 300.  The highest that I had ever been.  That day I started researching for someone to do WLS in the city of Topeka.  I found Tallgrass and learned that to start thier program the first step is to attend one of their seminars.  I had just missed the July one so it was wait until the August seminar.  August 14, 2010 came and I was up early to make sure that I was on time, since the information stated that if you were late you didn't get in.

As I walked in I was thinking about doing banding as I wasn't sure I wanted that much change in my life.  I listened to what the doctor had to say, and this changed my mind and now I'm looking at RNY, maybe even DS.  The goal that I want to hit first is to get off my shots for diabetes.  I have had diabetes for 12+ years so I know that I may never get off pills, but I do really want to get off shots.

August 17 was my mother's birthday so that was when I told her.  I thought she would be on my side and happy for me, but that's not what happened.  She is dragging her feet because I have to do this a self pay since I have BCBS of KS, and they dont pay any on WLS.  I going forward though and hope as the time gets closer she will get on board and be happy for me.

I take the next step on September 9th when I visit with Dr. Hamliton of the Tallgrass.  I will let you know how things go.
