I have been researching and trying to have WLS since I was 18 years old. I am 26 now. I thought I was going to have it in 2005 when my PCP arranged for me to see Dr. Schirmer at the University of Virginia. My insurance at the time was even going to cover the surgery. While I was completing the insurance requirements (supervised diets, etc.), I graduated and got a new job that had a different insurance carrier. My new insurance has a total written exclusion for anything related to weight loss.
I made the decision that I wanted to pursue having Lap-Band surgery using self-pay. I contacted Dr. Schirmer's office again, after nearly 2 years had passed since my initial appointment (where I was approved for RNY). I went back to UVA on March 8, 2007 and was approved for Lap-Band surgery. I am now scheduled for April 9!
