09/06/07. I am at this writing, 51 y/o. The members of my family are tall and slim, short and round, and everywhere in between. I guess I cannot claim a genetic problem here.
I have not had a weight problem "all of my life", although it sure feels like it sometimes. I really started to notice a weight gain about 15 years ago or so. I attributed it to a lifestyle change where I was mostly working behind a desk. That would have worked, except I was still quite active hunting and fishing, refereeing high school football games and other sporting events. I got out and cut and split wood for the fireplace etc. So, what was the cause?
About 5-6 years ago, I really started to gain weight. I think it was a combination of things, I was developing a rather severe and undiagnosed sleep apnea, going through a divorce, my dad had just died, grandmother was gravely ill etc. So ... I slowed down, had a little depression, ate more than I should have etc.
The sleep apnea was causing some metabolic problems, and since I was feeling tired and run down, I did not feel like being active either so I got caught in a catch 22. I gained about 80 # in one year, and slowly moved up over the next several years to where I am now. The sleep apnea is under control with the use of a CPAP device and good guidance from the Doc.
I really want to say goodbye to the extra pounds, I've tried the more traditional ways with some success but ... I need more.
I have the motivation and desire, so I have been researching the bariatric alternative. This is how I found OH and have contacted a couple of other members. I also have friends that have had bariatric surgery with good success. I have learned from them, but wanted more. Today I talked with Dan E. on the phone. He was very warm and helpful.
I have many reasons to do this, but mostly I want to do this for ME!
